Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Richard Allen could have just been another statistic. But faith in Yahweh (God), coupled with hope and perseverance has allowed him to thrive amid arduous circumstances. In a cautionary retelling of his personal experiences penned from a prison bunk, Allen shares insight into his path through life with the hope of helping the urban, at-risk population to both navigate (and stay on) the path to success by identifying the potential pitfalls that may hinder progress. While sharing lessons learned and wisdom intended to guide others to adequately prepare for the future, Allen encourages those at risk to be proactive while facing challenges, to find the hidden blessings, transform their mindset, and pay attention to the little details and subtle compromises that are not conducive to forward progression in life. Rich in Purpose, Poor in Pride is an inspirational handbook filled with personal stories and practical wisdom shared to guide and keep those at risk on the narrow path to success.

Our mental paradigm about leadership must shift, argues author Priya Somaiya, and Pride and Purpose achieves just that. It is a fascinating compilation of experiences and stories, and her tryst with leaders and leadership from all walks of life. Not all of leadership is about positional power and control. Rather, most of it silently and sensitively engages with building and transforming lives, organisations and society. The complex intersection and convergence of diverse personalities, skills, styles and qualities in leaders presented in various chapters of the book appear to impact human experiences in similar and yet diverse ways. Leaders influence thought and perception, aspiration and motivation. They earn respect and trust. They create resolute will and discipline and demonstrate working through failure and pain. Leaders interface hugely with time and the elusive framework of the future. They role model risk-taking and a lasting passion for learning. Dr Somaiya's work weaves all these dimensions together in a converging mosaic around leadership behaviours, which appear to strengthen the significantly important pillars around which all leadership devolves-the feeling of pride and the anchoring of purpose in life.

Why I Believe In Poverty As The Richest Experience That Can Come To A Boy written by Edward Bok and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-30 with categories.

He must know with what he has to work; and once sure of his tools, he must learn the thing he has set for himself to do, having a distinct purpose in view, and, being fully conscious that he is right and capable, not allowing himself to be swerved from his aim. After acquiring true knowledge of himself, I know of nothing so valuable to a young man as an absolute distinctness of purpose, and then pursuing that purpose to success... "I believe in poverty as a condition to experience, to go through, and then to get out of: not as a condition to stay in. "That's all very well," some will say; "easy enough to say, but how can you get out of it?" No one can definitely tell another that. No one told me. No two persons can find the same way out. Each must find his way for himself. That depends on the boy. I was determined to get out of poverty because my mother was not born in it, could not stand it, and did not belong in it. This gave me the first essential: a purpose. Then I backed up the purpose with effort and a willingness to work, and to work at anything that came my way, no matter what it was, so long as it meant "the way out." I did not pick and choose: I took what came, and did it in the best way I knew how; and when I didn't like what I was doing I still did it well while I was doing it, but I saw to it that I didn't do it any longer than I had to do it. I used every rung in the ladder as a rung to the one above. It meant effort, of course, untiring, ceaseless, and unsparing, and it meant work, hard as nails. But out of the effort and the work came the experience; the upbuilding; the development; the capacity to understand and sympathize; the greatest heritage that can come to a boy. And nothing in the world can give that to a boy, so that it will burn into him, as will poverty. "That is why I believe so strongly in poverty, the greatest blessing in the way of the deepest and fullest experience that can come to a boy. But, as I repeat: always as a condition to work out of, not to stay in." "THE first, the most essential, and the greatest element of success with a young man starting out to make a career is a correct knowledge of himself. He should, before he attempts anything, understand himself. He should study himself. He should be sure that, no matter whom else he may misunderstand, he has a correct knowledge of his own nature, his own character, and his own capabilities. And it is because so few young men have this knowledge of self that so many make disastrous failures, or fail in achieving what they set out for themselves at the beginning. "Every man in this world is created differently; no two are alike. Therefore, the nature, the thoughts, the character, the capacity of one man is utterly unlike that of another. What one man can understand another cannot. The success of one man indicates nothing to a second man. What one is capable of doing is beyond the power of another. Hence it is important that, first of all, a young man should look into himself, find out what has been given him, and come to a clear understanding of what he can do and what he cannot do. "It is one of the most pitiable sights imaginable to see, as one does so constantly, young men floundering and fluttering from one phase of life to another, unable to fasten upon any one, simply because a knowledge of themselves is absent. The result is that we see so many round men trying to fit themselves into square holes." CONTENTS I A Correct Knowledge of Himself II What, Really, is Success? III The Young Man in Business IV His Social Life and Amusements V "Sowing his Wild Oats" VI In Matters of Dress VII His Religious Life VIII His Attitude Toward Women IX The Question of Marriage

Wealth And Poverty Of Nations written by David S. Landes and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-20 with Social Science categories.

The history of nations is a history of haves and have-nots, and as we approach the millennium, the gap between rich and poor countries is widening. In this engrossing and important new work, eminent historian David Landes explores the complex, fascinating and often startling causes of the wealth and poverty of nations. The answers are found not only in the large forces at work in economies: geography, religion, the broad swings of politics, but also in the small surprising details. In Europe, the invention of spectacles doubled the working life of skilled craftsmen, and played a prominent role in the creation of articulated machines, and in China, the failure to adopt the clock fundamentally hindered economic development. The relief of poverty is vital to the survival of us all. As David Landes brilliantly shows, the key to future success lies in understanding the lessons the past has to teach us - lessons uniquely imparted in this groundbreaking and vital book which exemplifies narrative history at its best.

Before the 99% occupied Wall Street... Before the concept of social justice had impinged on the social conscience... Before the social safety net had even been conceived... By the turn of the 20th Century, the era of the robber barons, Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) had already accumulated a staggeringly large fortune; he was one of the wealthiest people on the globe. He guaranteed his position as one of the wealthiest men ever when he sold his steel business to create the United States Steel Corporation. Following that sale, he spent his last 18 years, he gave away nearly 90% of his fortune to charities, foundations, and universities. His charitable efforts actually started far earlier. At the age of 33, he wrote a memo to himself, noting ..".The amassing of wealth is one of the worse species of idolatry. No idol more debasing than the worship of money." In 1881, he gave a library to his hometown of Dunfermline, Scotland. In 1889, he spelled out his belief that the rich should use their wealth to help enrich society, in an article called "The Gospel of Wealth" this book. Carnegie writes that the best way of dealing with wealth inequality is for the wealthy to redistribute their surplus means in a responsible and thoughtful manner, arguing that surplus wealth produces the greatest net benefit to society when it is administered carefully by the wealthy. He also argues against extravagance, irresponsible spending, or self-indulgence, instead promoting the administration of capital during one's lifetime toward the cause of reducing the stratification between the rich and poor. Though written more than a century ago, Carnegie's words still ring true today, urging a better, more equitable world through greater social consciousness.
