Se per tutto il secolo scorso gli scienziati hanno indagato a fondo il ruolo del DNA nel determinare chi siamo, negli ultimi decenni lo sviluppo dell'epigenetica sta dimostrando quanto l'ambiente e il contesto psicosociale possano anch'essi rilevarsi fondamentali. Mappare il codice genetico di un organismo non è sufficiente per prevedere come si svilupperà, perché la funzione del nostro DNA è influenzata anche dagli stimoli esterni, come l'attività fisica e la dieta, le relazioni personali e le abitudini sociali. Questa prospettiva stravolge il paradigma riduzionista che ha caratterizzato lo studio della vita, per cui le cause delle malattie vanno ricercate sempre a livello molecolare, marginalizzando il ruolo della psiche e delle manifestazioni psicosomatiche nell'influenzare i processi biologici. Noi non siamo il prodotto di istruzioni fisse e invariabili, scritte nel nostro codice genetico: diventiamo chi siamo grazie all'interazione tra corpo e mente, individuo e ambiente. Sta dunque emergendo un approccio più olistico, in grado di spiegare l'effetto di fenomeni come l'isolamento sociale e lo stress, che molteplici studi correlano a esiti avversi sulla salute non solo mentale, ma anche fisica. Si fa così strada una nuova visione per la prevenzione e il trattamento delle malattie croniche che affliggono le società avanzate, dalla depressione al cancro. In un viaggio attraverso la storia e la filosofia della scienza, Non tutto è scritto nel DNA ci porta tra le pieghe della rivoluzione epigenetica e ci proietta nel futuro della medicina. Con l'auspicio che, grazie a un dialogo sempre più serrato tra discipline, «lo sguardo clinico si allarghi su orizzonti sempre più ampi e capaci di accogliere una nuova concezione della natura e della materia».
