In this biography Nico J.G. Kaptein studies the life and times of Sayyid ʿUthman (1822-1914), the most prominent Muslim scholar of his era in the Netherlands East Indies. During his long career, he provided guidance to the Muslim community and from 1889 onwards simultaneously served the colonial government as advisor for Muslim affairs after the famous C. Snouck Hurgronje had engaged him. Based on an analysis of his writings, Kaptein focuses on the question of how Sayyid ʿUthman viewed the place of Islam in the colonial state and the many reactions this provoked, both nationally and internationally, e.g. from the Cairo-based reformist Rashid Rida. The Quest For Evolutionary Socialism written by Manfred B. Steger and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-03-27 with Political Science categories.

The Quest for Evolutionary Socialism is a timely response to the need for a new, comprehensive biography of the life and works of Eduard Bernstein, the German "Father of Marxist Revisionism". Professor Steger addresses recent academic developments and current debates on the "End of Socialism". Setting this study within the historical context of the European labor movement, Steger thus interprets Bernstein's "Evolutionary Socialism" as an ethically-motivated quest for liberty, solidarity and distributive justice.

Citizenship And Capitalism written by Bryan S. Turner, Professor and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-01 with Political Science categories.

First published in 1986, this study explores the development of citizenship as a way of demonstrating the effective use of political institutions to advance group interests. Bryan Turner rejects Marxist criticisms of reformism to illustrate that 'subordinate' groups can achieve significant advances in social and economic rights, and that democracy is a necessary mechanism for the pursuit of interests. This historical and sociological analysis raises fundamental questions about the nature of legal personality, individualism and identity in modern societies, and will be of wide interest to students of politics, sociology, and social philosophy.

Chinese Utopianism written by Shiping Hua and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Political Science categories.

Chinese Utopianism offers a new explanation of extreme radicalism in Chinese reform movements from the late nineteenth century through the Cultural Revolution and into the post-Mao era. By studying comparable Japanese and Russian reforms that have, in contrast, pulled their societies back toward the center, Shiping Hua demonstrates how datong--an ancient concept that can be translated as "great harmony"--and other elements of Chinese thought have led China down a unique political path.

The Life And Thought Of Friedrich Engels written by J. D. Hunley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with Philosophy categories.

For the last thirty years, scholars have stressed differences between the ideas of Marx and Engels and have blamed the failures of twentieth-century communism on Engels alone. In this book J..D. Hunley refutes this view, arguing that Engels did not disagree with Marx about important issues and did not distort Marx's views after the latter's death. Hunley shows that Engels possessed a wide-ranging intellect and would hardly have supported the repressive regimes that until recently prevailed in Eastern Europe and still exist in China and elsewhere.
