This volume 2 and its companion volume 1 present the results of new investigations into the geology, paleontology and paleoecology of the early hominin site of Laetoli in northern Tanzania. The site is one of the most important paleontological and paleoanthropological sites in Africa, worldrenowned for the discovery of fossils of the early hominin Australopithecus afarensis, as well as remarkable trails of its footprints. The first volume provides new evidence on the geology, geochronology, ecology, ecomorphology and taphonomy of the site. The second volume describes newly discovered fossil hominins from Laetoli, belonging to Australopithecus afarensis and Paranthropus aethiopicus, and presents detailed information on the systematics and paleobiology of the diverse associated fauna. Together, these contributions provide one of the most comprehensive accounts of a fossil hominin site, and they offer important new insights into the early stages of human evolution and its context.

This is a print on demand publication. The excavation of an immense pit near the Santee River in South Carolina has produced the first Paleocene vertebrate fauna from the South Atlantic coast of the U.S., as well as a rich flora that provides extensive knowledge of the paleoenvironmental setting in which those animals flourished nearly 60 million years ago. The excavation penetrated the Late Paleocene Williamsburg Formation & yielded many specimens collected from the spoil piles, among which were the first Paleocene mammal remains from the east coast of North America. Here, eight paleobiologists interpret the discoveries systematically & compare them with Paleocene floras & faunas from elsewhere in North America & around the globe. Auhors include: Bruce Erickson (crocodilians & a snake); Robert Weems (bony fishes); Weems & Laurel Bybell (geological setting); Lucy Edwards (dinoflagellates); Robert Melchior (pollen, spores, fossil wood, & amber); Robert Purdy (sharks & rays); Howard Hutchison & Robert Weems (turtles); Robert Schoch (mammals), Glenn Sawyer (coprolites); & Erickson & Melchior (trace fossils). "One of the most significant contributions to our knowledge of early Tertiary times in this region."

Describes a new assemblage of Late Cretaceous dinosaur and reptile remains from Campanian and Maastrichtian deposits of eastern South Carolina (SC). Six of the 14 localities include new occurrences of theropod and hadrosaur dinosaurs, substantially increasing the known localities in the eastern U.S. that have produced dinosaur remains. The important but seldom-mentioned role that SC played in the early history of studies of North Amer. Cretaceous deposits and faunas is outlined, and the stratigraphic settings of 14 localities are analyzed. Of the 6 localities where dinosaur bones were found, two yielded the majority -- Stokes Quarry, Darlington County, in the mid-Campanian Coachman Formation; and the late Campanian Donoho Creek Formation at Kingstree, Williamsburg County. This book contributes to the ongoing empirical, conceptual, and meta-theoretical debates regarding the merits and drawbacks of the cartographic program in linguistic theory. Although cartography has its roots in the study of the left periphery, its empirical scope has expanded significantly over the years and now covers a wide range of domains such as argument structure, modification, and constituent order. The chapters in this volume offer a critical examination of the cartographic assumption that there is a rich array of functional projections whose hierarchical order is fixed and determined by Universal Grammar. They discuss the nature of these cartographic hierarchies and their relation to the central theoretical goal of explanatory adequacy: are functional hierarchies an irreducible property of Universal Grammar (hence constituting part of the "residue" beyond the scope of principled explanation), or are they emergent, deriving from independent principles that do not require a further enrichment of Universal Grammar?

Operation on fractures of shafts and joints is chiefly indicated in the upper arm, forearm, femur and tibia. Injuries in these areas can almost always be successfully treated by the techniques described in the "AS IF Manual of Internal Fixation," followed by early exercises. The fixation of small fragments which are of such biomechanical importance, has hitherto given indifferent results, especially when the distal parts of the hand and foot are involved. The implants and instruments developed by Dr. Heim and tried out by AS IF members during recent years have now been assembled into a "small fragment set," which is now available. These implants have significantly expanded the scope of AS IF instrumentation for internal fixation. Pannike first compared the application of the small fragment set with the conventional methods used in hand surgery. Heim and Pfeiffer in cooperation with Meuli, illustrate in this Volume the small fragment set, elucidating in a didactic manner the composition of the set, the indications for its use, and its method of application to all suitable fractures. Enough good results have been secured to establish the usefulness of this development. The following volume may therefore be regarded as an important supplement to the ASIF Manual. It makes it clear again that every internal fixation requires a high level of technical skill, a sense of responsibility, and very gentle handling of the soft tissues.

Image And Myth written by Luca Giuliani and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-11 with Art categories.
On museum visits, we pass by beautiful, well-preserved vases from ancient Greece—but how often do we understand what the images on them depict? In Image and Myth, Luca Giuliani tells the stories behind the pictures, exploring how artists of antiquity had to determine which motifs or historical and mythic events to use to tell an underlying story while also keeping in mind the tastes and expectations of paying clients. Covering the range of Greek style and its growth between the early Archaic and Hellenistic periods, Giuliani describes the intellectual, social, and artistic contexts in which the images were created. He reveals that developments in Greek vase painting were driven as much by the times as they were by tradition—the better-known the story, the less leeway the artists had in interpreting it. As literary culture transformed from an oral tradition, in which stories were always in flux, to the stability of written texts, the images produced by artists eventually became nothing more than illustrations of canonical works. At once a work of cultural and art history, Image and Myth builds a new way of understanding the visual culture of ancient Greece.
