Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - Region: Western Europe, grade: 70%, 1,5, Dublin City University, course: Introduction to Modern Ireland, language: English, abstract: Tom Garvin introduces his book “The Evolution of Irish Nationalist Politics” from 2005 with the following appraisal: “The political parties of the Irish Republic are somewhat exotic entities. The country’s party system, and its style of popular politics in general, are untypical of Western liberal democracies in many ways.” He is proved right when looking at the classical political model and Ireland’s party structure. The general political spectrum that “divides political ideologies on the basis of their beliefs” is not applicable to the Irish political landscape. One can neither find a clearly left-wing nor a genuine right-wing party. Instead, two big and nearly equal conservative parties prevail: Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil. For many years these parties dominate the Dáil winning together over 50% of the seats every election. Since their foundation in the early 20th century the parties share basically the same political platform and represent therefore just an alternative to each other. The Irish population constantly favoured centre-right politics and consequently other political camps were generally left by the roadside: in 2007, for instance, the Labour Party and the Green Party together won only 26 out of 166 seats. Another factor for Ireland’s flat political landscape is the lack of cleavages within the Irish society. Not only due to “exceptional ethnic and religious uniformity, [...] [based on] the role of the Catholic Church in social and political life” but also due to Ireland’s late industrialisation, traditional and homogeneous voting was and still is more influential than in other western democracies. The three factors, introduced above and explained in detail below, are not the exclusive reasons for Ireland’s unique political landscape. Instead, the whole party structure matured over the past 100 years. It is therefore important to regard the process as a whole, to better understand the evolution of the current situation.

The first full length study of the Irish Socialist Republican Party uses primary sources to delve into the internal politics and personalities that brought life to this important organisation. The party produced the first regular socialist paper in Ireland the Workers' Republic, ran candidates in local elections, represented Ireland at the Second International, agitated over issues such as the Boer War and the 1798 commemorations. Politically, the ISRP was before its time, putting the call for an independent "Republic" at the centre of its propaganda before Sinn Fein or others had done so. The political significance of the organisation led by James Connolly is also viewed in both the international and national sphere. The legacy of the ISRP was to have an impact on the left-wing and republican movements in Ireland for many decades following it's demise in 1904.

While the type of small political party In Ireland has varied, their fate, it seems, has not. Although some enjoy a brief time in the sun, termination is the long-term prospects for all minor parties. The usual pattern is a speedy ascent, an impact on the political system including a time in government, followed by a prolonged termination. This book examines this pattern of evolution for minor, or small, parties in Irish politics. As the Irish state has changed, so too have the types of parties that have emerged. With the first-time entry of the Greens into government in 2007, their wipeout in 2011, the termination of the Progressive Democrats in 2009, and the failure of a new party to emerge despite the on-going financial crisis, the time is ripe for this analysis.

The novel---THE WAY IRELAND OUGHT TO BE--- is a fiction of an impressionistic nature derived from the composite life experiences outlined. The novel tells the story of a teacher Dr Quinn who is sectioned in a psychiatric clinic and is told he is schizophrenic. The novel relates his struggle to discover his true self, his true identity as an Irish man and in the struggle he creates The National Government of Ireland Act as the solution to the Irish problem. He gives the Act to Dr Kane to read but the doctor dismisses it as unreadable rubbish. He is then given an injection by force and is turned out of the clinic to live in a dirty dump of a flat. The novel deals with reality, delusion, the imagination, identity and the solution to the Irish problem. The authors concise solution to the Irish problem is at present being published in the Irish political journal---The Blanket---and can be found on the Internet. The author is in his sixties and has been married. He has a family of four and three grandchildren. He is now divorced. He lives in Derry where he has many friends and enjoys the close support of his three sisters. His interests are writing, reading, gardening, interior design, charity work and a daily work out in the local gym. He intends to write two further novels, one titled The Rape of the Virgin, which has to do with good and evil in a rural parish in Ireland and another titled Size Matters, which will deal with communal bigotry in Ireland. Chidi Lynn typed the novel on to disk and Tony Doyle, an art student at the N.W. Institute of Further and Higher Education in Derry, created the design for the cover. This collection explores how the British left has interacted with the 'Irish question' throughout the twentieth century, the left's expression of solidarity with Irish republicanism and relationships built with Irish political movements. Throughout the twentieth century, the British left expressed, to varying degrees, solidarity with Irish republicanism and fostered links with republican, nationalist, socialist and labour groups in Ireland. Although this peaked with the Irish Revolution from 1916 to 1923 and during the 'Troubles' in the 1970s-80s, this collection shows that the British left sought to build relationships with their Irish counterparts (in both the North and South) from the Edwardian to Thatcherite period. However these relationships were much more fraught and often reflected an imperial dynamic, which hindered political action at different stages during the century. This collection explores various stages in Irish political history where the British left attempted to engage with what was happening across the Irish Sea. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal, Contemporary British History.
