This book is the result of a project that I started work on a decade ago but later laid aside for several years. At the time I began my study of the deontologists it was my impression that the movement was virtually ended, with only a historical interest for ethicists. Since then, I have revised my opinion. Although few writers today can be called followers of the deontologists, much that is being written, even by those who reject the deontologists' basic assumptions, bears witness of their influence. The continuing vitality of deontological ethics, it seems to me, rests mainly on the deontologists' profound respect for the concrete facts of man's moral life. In evaluating any ethical theory, the question they ask is not, Is the theory neat and simple? but rather, Does it accurately reflect our deepest moral convictions? In its persistent attempt to do justice to the facts, even if this means abandoning the major tradition in the history of Western ethics, lies the main strength of the deontologists' position. Whatever the fate of their own theory may be, the deontologists have, in their real concern for the facts, made a significant and, I think, lasting contribution to ethical thought. Many people - far too many to mention here - have helped in one way or another with the production of this book.

This appraisal of two of the most fundamental terms in the moral language of Thomas Aquinas draws on the contemporary moral distinction between the goodness of a person and the rightness of a person's living. Keenan thus finds that Aquinas's earlier writings do not permit the possibility of such a distinction. But in his mature works, specifically the Summa Theologiae, Thomas describes the human act of moral intentionality, and even the virtues in a way analogous to our use of the term moral rightness. To Thomas, only the virtue of charity expresses moral goodness. And, although Thomas describes vices and sin as wrong conduct, he never really develops a description for moral badness.Keenan compels us to carefully examine Thomas's central moral concepts and to measure them against contemporary standards for meaning and correctness. As a result, any student of Thomas will find here a forceful argument that his notion of the good is considerably different from ours. Similarly, ethicists and moral theologians will find in the Thomas presented here a consistent-virtue ethicist concerned with descriptions for right living. Any student of theology will also find here a Thomas whose critical and concrete thinking enabled him to develop and even abandon earlier positions as his comprehension of the Good evolved. This analysis prompts a re-examination of our own concepts. Measuring Thomas's standards against our own, Keenan obliges us to ask whether we sufficiently understand rightness and moral intentionality. He also asks whether we correctly describe what it means to will or to desire something. He further questions whether we have surrendered our understanding of the virtues to the voluntarism and subjectivism which Thomas relentlessly critiqued. This historically sophisticated reading of the Summa Thologiae both allows Thomas to speak again as he once did, and affords us the chance to evaluate the way we describe ourselves and one another as being good and living rightly.

The Right and the Good, a classic of twentieth-century philosophy by the great scholar Sir David Ross, is now presented in a new edition. Ross's book, originally published in 1930, is the pinnacle of ethical intuitionism, which was the dominant moral theory in British philosophy for much of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The central concern of the book is with rightness and goodness, and their relation. Ross argues against notable rival ethical theories. The right act, he held, cannot be derived from the moral value of the motive from which it is done. Furthermore, rightness is not wholly determined by the value of the consequences of one's action, whether this value is some benefit for the agent, or some agent-neutral good. Rather, the right act is determined by a plurality of self-evident prima facie duties. Ross portrayed rightness and goodness as simple non-natural properties. Philip Stratton-Lake, a leading expert on Ross, provides a substantial new Introduction, in which he discusses the central themes of The Right and the Good and clears up some common misunderstandings. The question round which discussion has mainly turned is, How shall a man know that the act presumed to be right, good, and virtuous, is really so? What test, or touchstone shall be applied to the willing and acting of men whereby the rightness or wrongness, the goodness or badness, of a motive or act shall be revealed? In other words, 'What is the measure or criterion of acts or states of the will in respect of rightness?' This mode of putting the question is, it seems to me, preferable to the more usual phrase, 'What is the Criterion of morality,' because the word 'morality' is of varying and indefinite signification, and may be so used as to confound, if not sometimes to beg, the question at issue: at the same time, as it is legitimate to substitute the word 'acts,' in its larger and proper meaning, for 'states of the will' the question may be also put thus: 'What is the criterion of rightness in acts?'
