This book about Rikers Island uses the Art of War as a tool to understand how to overcome being imprisoned in the largest jail in the world. Rikers Island allows the reader to understand the individual incarcerated from a more human perspective. The books intent is to create change through awareness of a human crisis that is understood in less than humane terms. The book identifies education as a tool for overcoming a huge prison and jail population that is 98 percent Black and Hispanic. Advocacy for the reinstitution of the college degree program is an underlying theme that develops as a solution to the Black Diaspora.

My name is Thomas Coppolino and I began my career in 1978 in the belly of the beast known as Rikers Island. In my 22 years working on Rikers Island my career was filled with many amazing stories which I will share with you. From my humorous encounters with Mark David Chapman (killer of John Lennon), to the escape of 4 notorious inmates from Rikers Island Hospital, I will have you laughing and shaking your head throughout the book. I will also teach you success principals which could put you on a road to success in your life. It is my prayer that every one of you who reads this book will seek to have a relationship with Christ. If you want prosperity, give generously, not only with your money, but also with your time. Smile at people every day and be a friend. Strive to be someone that people want to be around. God gave us two ears and one mouth. Listen more than you speak. There are many people out there who are hurting and just need to see a smiling face or hear a kind word. Love people unconditionally and give of yourself without expecting anything in return. Live each day of your life to the fullest. Pray daily for your family and ask God to keep His hedge of protection over their lives. Always remember that God's Word is His promise to you. If you truly believe that, He will do what His Word says He can do. Your faith activates God to move in your life. I pray for God to keep His angels in charge over you and your family. I pray that I have encouraged someone out there to begin your own journey to success. Someday I hope to be reading your story.

Captives written by Jarrod Shanahan and has been published by Verso Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-17 with Political Science categories.

The definitive history of America’s most notorious jail and the violent rise of New York City’s law-and-order movement Captives combines a thrilling account of Rikers Island’s descent into infamy with a dramatic retelling of the last seventy years of New York politics from the vantage point of the city’s jails. It is the story of a crowded field of contending powers—city bureaucrats and unions, black power activists and guards, crooked cops and elected leaders—struggling for power and influence, a tale culminating in mass incarceration and the triumph of neoliberalism. It is a riveting chronicle of how the Rikers Island of today—and the social order it represents—came to be. Conjuring sweeping cinematic vistas, Captives records how the tempo of history was set by bloody and bruising clashes between guards and prisoners, between rank and filers and union bosses, between reformers and reactionaries, and between police officers and virtually everyone else. Written by a one-time Rikers prisoner, Captives draws on extensive archival research, decades of journalism, interviews, prisoner testimonials, and firsthand experience to deliver an urgent intervention into our national discussion about the future of mass incarceration and the call to abolish prisons. The contentious debate about the future of the Rikers Island penal colony rolls onward, and Captives is a must-read for anyone interested in the island and what it represents.

These Walls written by Eva Fedderly and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-24 with History categories.

A deeply reported work of narrative nonfiction that takes readers behind the scenes of one of the most consequential decisions of our time—the closure of Rikers Island—and what it could mean for the future of prison reform and restorative justice. For nearly a century, Rikers Island has stood on a 416-acre strip of land in the East River, housing an average daily population of 10,000 prisoners (the majority of whom are awaiting arraignment and trial), employing about the same number of corrections officers and civilian workers, and costing just over $800 million per year to operate. It is the largest correctional and mental facility in New York City. It also one of the most controversial and notorious jails in America. Which is why, when Mayor Bill De Blasio announced in 2017 that Rikers would be closed within the next decade, replaced with new buildings designed to reflect new outlooks on mass incarceration and prisoner rehabilitation, the decision––which seemed to be a step towards a more humane, more understanding future as terms like abolition and “Defund the Police” were becoming common conversation––sounded like an unalloyed good to many, including Architectural Digest writer Eva Fedderly, who was leading the magazine’s coverage of the closure. But, as she dug deeper and spoke to more people in the different populations surrounding and participating directly in the debate, she discovered that the consensus was hardly universal. Many told her that new jails wouldn’t solve anything—but what could were more programs outside of jails, more equity, and alternative ways to deal with crime. People needed to be given the tools to succeed. Only then, could violence, racism, and crime in America subside. So why was no one listening? In These Walls, Fedderly takes readers behind the scenes and through the layers of the Rikers decision and what it will really mean for reformists, justice architects, abolitionists, city government officials, prison guards, and most wrenchingly, the incarcerated themselves. The result is a compelling blend of on-the-ground reporting and sweeping social and architectural history, perfect for readers of Locking Up Our Own and American Prison that captures the texture of this centuries-old debate and challenges our long-held beliefs about what constitutes justice and power.

NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • A shocking, groundbreaking oral history of the infamous Rikers jail complex and an unflinching portrait of injustice and resilience told by the people whose lives have been forever altered by it “This mesmerizing and gut-wrenching book shows the brutal realities that tens of thousands of people have been forced to navigate, and survive, in America’s most notorious jail.”—Piper Kerman, New York Times bestselling author of Orange is the New Black What happens when you pack almost a dozen jails, bulging at the seams with society’s cast-offs, onto a spit of landfill purposefully hidden from public view? Prize-winning journalists Graham Rayman and Reuven Blau have spent two years interviewing more than 130 people comprising a broad cross section of lives touched by New York City's Rikers Island prison complex—from incarcerated people and their relatives, to officers, lawyers, and commissioners, with stories spanning the 1970s to the present day. The portrait that emerges calls into question the very nature of justice in America. Offering a 360-degree view inside the country’s largest detention complex, the deeply personal accounts—featured here for the first time—take readers on a harrowing journey into every corner of Rikers, a failed society unto itself that reflects society’s failings as a whole. Dr. Homer Venters was shocked by the screams on his first day working at Rikers: “They’re in solitary, just yelling . . . the yelling literally never stops.” After a few months, though, Dr. Venters notes, one's ears adjust to the sounds. Nestor Eversley recalls how detainees made weapons from bones. Barry Campbell recalls hiding a razor blade in his mouth—“just in case”. These are visceral stories of despair, brutality, resilience, humor, and hope, told by the people who were marooned on the island over the course of decades. As calls to shutter jails and reduce the number of incarcerated people grow louder across the country, with the movement to close the island complex itself at the forefront, Rikers is a resounding lesson about the human consequences of the incarceration industry.
