Sozialversicherungen haben den Umgang mit Risiken seit dem ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert fundamental verandert. Am Beispiel der staatlichen Unfallversicherung der Schweiz wird dieser Wandel, eingebettet in den europaischen und transatlantischen Kontext, untersucht. Das Buch verfolgt die Entwicklung der Risikoforschung von der Planung der staatlichen Unfallversicherung vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg bis zu ihrer Konsolidierung nach 1945. Arbeitsmedizin, Arbeitspsychologie und Versicherungsmathematik spielten fur die Organisation und Durchfuhrung der Unfallversicherung eine Schlusselrolle. Der Staat erlaubte diesen Disziplinen, ihre Risikokonzepte empirisch zu uberprufen und dadurch die Grundlagen fur die moderne Risikoforschung zu bereiten. Beleuchtet wird auch der Aufstieg des Praventionsgedankens in der Industriearbeit nach 1945, der ein goldenes Zeitalter der sozialstaatlichen Risikoforschung einlautete. Insgesamt verweist die Studie auf das methodologisch noch kaum ausgeschopfte Potential einer Verbindung von Sozial- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte.

Interest in the history of the workplace is on the rise. Recent work in this area has combined traditional methods and theories of social history with new approaches and new questions. It constitutes a ‘topical contact zone’, a particularly dynamic field of research at the junction of social history, history of occupational health and safety, history of technology and the industrial environment. This book focuses on the new approaches in this important and growing area and their possible range of influence. These new attempts to rewrite a history of the workplace are multiple - and in some cases disparate - but share many key characteristics. They are turning away from the assumption that class and class conflict is the prime mover in social history, abandoning the traditional binomial workers vs. entrepreneurs perspective which had long sustained the historical perspective on labour. Moreover, as this collections outlines, these new attempts concentrate on the analysis of complex social networks of actors that defined and configured industrial workplaces, suggesting a broadening of possible social actors. Welfare state models have for decades been the gold standard of welfare state research. Beyond Welfare State Models escapes the straightjacket of conventional welfare state models and challenges the existing literature in two ways. Firstly the contributors argue that the standard typologies have omitted important aspects of welfare state development. Secondly, the work develops and underlines the importance of a more fluid transnational conceptualisation.
