"Megan McKenna leads us to look closely at our prized possessions: the rituals of the church that protect our world from the ravages of evil and injustice and keep alive our hopes for love and goodness. In her engaging, unique style, McKenna combines the study of scripture and church teachings with storytelling as she walks us through the Rites of Initiation, Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage, and Orders. Her reflections show how the rituals of the church inextricably connect us to the ethics of Jesus." "Rites of Justice explores each sacrament fully, including its origins in scripture, its practice today, its ethical teaching, and what this means for the way we live our lives. Throughout there is constant reference to the Rite for Christian Initiation of Adults, including an extended ritual written by McKenna intended for use with the majority of Christians, baptized as infants, who never received formal initiation as adults into the rituals of the church."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This book considers the ways in which religious beliefs and practices have contributed to the formation of Chinese legal culture. It does so by describing two forms of overlap between religion and the law: the ideology of justice and the performance of judicial rituals. One of the most important conceptual underpinnings of the Chinese ideology of justice is the belief in the inevitability of retribution. Similar values permeate Chinese religious traditions, all of which contend that justice will prevail despite corruption and incompetence among judicial officials in this world and even the underworld, with all wrongdoers eventually suffering some form of punishment. The second form of overlap between religion and the law may be found in the realm of practice, and involves instances when men and women perform judicial rituals like oaths, chicken-beheadings, and underworld indictments in order to enhance the legitimacy of their positions, deal with cases of perceived injustice, and resolve disputes. These rites coexist with other forms of legal practice, including private mediation and the courts, comprising a wide-ranging spectrum of practices Divine Justice will be of enormous interest to scholars of the Chinese legal system and the development of Chinese culture and society more generally.

Rites of Power provides a sweeping overview of the symbolism of power from tenth-century France to modern Britain. Approaching their topic from an eclectic range of intellectual traditions, the authors turn the study of politics, social relations, and cultural creation into a single endeavor. The essays begin with three assumptions: that all societies are ordered and governed by "master fictions" (divine right, equality for all) which make political hierarchy appear natural; that political rhetoric includes nonverbal communication (royal portraits, statistics on crop yields); and that common rhetoric can mean different things to various segments of a culture ("states' rights" during the American Civil War). Societies studied include France and Spain in the Middle Ages, post-Revolutionary France, the modern British monarchy, tsarist Russia, colonial Virginia, and industrial Germany. The essays were selected to provide methodological as well as historical coverage; the result is a comprehensive treatment along the cutting edge of several disciplines. This book will appeal to scholars and students in the fields of history, political science, sociology, anthropology, and art history.
