Beneath the Volcano is the first major account of the Nage, who inhabit the central part of Flores in eastern Indonesia. The book focuses on Nage ideas concerning a variety of spiritual beings and how these influence both ritual practices and ideas about human beings. In exploring these subjects, the author sets out to uncover a classification of spirits. While quite different from taxonomies of natural beings, Nage ways of linking named categories of spirits nevertheless reveal a regular conceptual order. In describing this order, use is made of a version of Dumont's notion of 'encompassment'. Common ideas informing relations between Nage humans and several categories of spirits are further interpreted as instances of a pervasive principle of 'symmetric inversion', according to which human beings are spirits for the spirits.

The Palestine War has been by far the most important military encounter in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. This book examines the origins of the war and its progression through two distinct stages: the guerrilla warfare between the Arab and Jewish communities of Mandatory Palestine, and the conventional inter-state war between the State of Israel and the invading Arab armies. In doing so it assesses the participants, their war aims, strategies and combat performance. Finally, it examines the reasons for Israel's success in the face of seemingly impossible odds and for the failure of the Arab nations to turn their military and numerical superiority into victory on the ground.

The Islamic Turks were poised to overrun Europe at The Battle of Vienna on September 11/12 of 1683, but were defeated. The Islamic Invasion As Mosques appear across the country people are asking-"What do I need to Know about Islam?" Islam-once an obscure Middle Eastern religion-has rapidly grown into the second largest religion in the world. There are now more Muslims than Episcopalians in the United States! What attraction does Islam hold for its followers? What part does it play in shaping the outlook and attitudes of nearly one billion people? Noted author Dr. Robert A. Morey, internationally recognized authority on the origins of the teachings and rituals of Islam- - explores the pre-Islamic history of Allah, and the doctrines and customs of Islam - reveals Islam's teaching about current issues such as religious freedom and the role of women The Islamic Invasion will give you the insight you need to understand Islam and the challenge it poses today. Dr. Morey warned the United States and Europe about Islam during the early 1980's long before 9/11. Most books on Islam since 9/11 have used his analysis of the Qur'an or Hadith. Special thanks to Professor Colin Akridge-who is a Vietnam Veteran and black scholar in the field of comparative religions-for his valuable and insightful contributions and working with him for researching and writing the section entitled The Black Muslim Movement in America. BY G. W. LOCHER Some years ago, in a discussion of the modern concept of structure, Levi-Strauss contended that the extraordinarily widespread employment of the term "structure" since 1930 reflected a rediscovery of the concept and the term rather than the continuation of a prior usage. This assertion may be correct in general, but it does not apply to the N ether lands, at least nOlI: so far as the concept of structure is concerned. The transmission of the concept in that country can in fact be quite easily traced. It began in 1917 with the publication by van Ossenbruggen of a study of the Javanese notion of montja-pat,l a paper which was in fluenced to a high degree by the famous monograph by Durkheim and Mauss, "De quelques formes primitives de classification", which had been published at the beginning of the century. 2 An even clearer structural approach is to be found in the extensive Leiden thesis of 3 W. H. Rassers, De Pandji-Roman. This dissertation itself refers with particular emphasis to van Ossenbruggen's paper and to the monograph by Durkheim and Mauss, as well as to various other publications by them. The ,studies later made by Rassers were also of such a kind that when a collection of them was published in English in 1959, under the title Panji, The Culture Hero, 4 they were aptly subtitled "A Structural Study of Religion in Java".

Media And Society written by James Curran and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-16 with Social Science categories.

Media and Society is an established textbook, popular worldwide for its insightful and accessible essays from leading international academics on the most pertinent issues in the media field today. With this updated edition, David Hesmondhalgh joins James Curran and a team of leading international scholars to speak to current issues relating to media and gender, media and democracy, sociology of news, the global internet, the political impact of the media, popular culture, the effects of digitisation on media industries, media and emotion, and other vital topics. The media are in a state of ferment, and are undergoing far-reaching change. The sixth edition tries to make sense of the media's transformation, and its wider implications. Purely descriptive accounts date fast, so the emphasis has been on identifying the central issues and problems arising from media change, and on evaluating its wider consequences. What is judged to be the staple elements of the field has evolved over time, as well as becoming more international in orientation. Yet the overriding aim of the book - to be useful to students - has remained constant. This text is an essential resource for all media, communication and film studies students who want to broaden their knowledge and understanding of how the media operates and affects society across the globe.

Tanebar Evav written by Cécile Barraud and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-04-02 with Social Science categories.

This book is written in French. The islands of Kei in the Moluccan archipelago are little known. This is a study of one of them, Tanebar-Evav, a small isolated island of fewer than 1000 inhabitants, situated at the south-west end of the archipelago. Cecile Barraud has carried out an intensive study of this small community and has made a detailed analysis of its social organisation. Here, as in other parts of Indonesia, the fundamental social unit is the house, which is the agent and focal point of all social relations. The houses are partners of exchange in all social events: marriages, funerals, seasonal rituals and others. The houses are thus the concrete units of an immediate and lasting social order, according to which the society persists, maintaining a the same time a strong sense of its own identity and an ancient and deep awareness of the outside world and history. This book will be of interest to anthropologists and to specialists in South-east Asian studies.

Written in 1989 when the modern tourist industry had reached a crucial stage in its development, when increased mobility and affluence had led to more extensive and extravagant travel, and competition within the industry had intensified, this book is comprehensive examination of tourism development. The author provides a new perspective for its evaluation, and a suggested strategy for its continued development and evolution. He examines tourism from the viewpoint of destination areas and their aspirations, and recommends an ecological, community approach to developing and planning – one which encourages local initiative, local benefits, and a tourism product in harmony with the local environment and its people.
