Tammy Meyers was shot to death in front of her home in a quiet Las Vegas neighborhood in what was originally thought to be a case of road rage. In many ways her husband Bob Meyers and their four children would suffer the loss of Tammy twice. The first time it came at the hands of a neighborhood misfit, Erich Nowsch, who later confessed to police to the shooting. The second time it was in the unrelenting flood of misinformed opinions and supposition of a handful of reporters and social media malcontents. The posts in the newspapers comments section didn't mean much in the broader context. Only a tiny fraction of readers of major newspapers read the comments section following the main story. The same people tend to post over and over again, whether it's about the police or a restaurant review. It's what some people do. Posts are typically misspelled and wildly inaccurate but in this context, for the Meyers family who had just lost their mother, the posts and the mass media coverage had the devastating effect of a sniper's bullet. Tammy was a murder victim and now it was as if she was being murdered all over again. The shooting occurred on the night of Feb. 12, 2015, but it would be months before Bob Meyers could bring himself to bury his wife. He explained to his children that he "refused to hold a funeral listening to a eulogy while a cloud remained over his wife's reputation." The truth was Tammy was an amazing, caring person who always took time for friends, no matter the hour. She had dozens of kids in the neighborhood who called her mom. At holiday dinners Tammy filled the Meyers home with kids who called themselves "orphans" - their parents were either estranged from them, working or just couldn't be bothered to go through the machinations of making a holiday meal. Young women, often depressed and battling life's problems, would find themselves alone and struggling to cope, yet they knew they could reach out to Tammy no matter what time of the day or night. She reached out to veterans, police officers, and homeless people. This is the woman whose reputation was trampled by the Las Vegas community she had called home for more than 10 years. They blamed Tammy for her own death. The rumors, the all-knowing "word on the street" motivations for the killing would be laughable if not for the context - supposedly "drug related," outrageous false accusations of an illicit affair with the 5-foot-3 killer. As police advanced their investigation and additional facts emerged, it became clear that what was originally termed road rage was actually a case of mistaken identity. Tammy Meyers' murder was actually committed by a lost young man she had tried to help, someone she had invited into her home to have dinner with her family. Her killer, the diminutive Erich Nowsch, would later confess to police and his own mother that he "didn't know he was killing a great mother, a great person" - he thought he was killing a rival gang member. He told police he thought he was killing "a kid." When you get right down to it, Tammy Meyers was murdered by Erich Nowsch for no reason at all.Yet in a city that is infamous for its share of high-profile killers, serial murderers, mobsters, and street thugs, Las Vegas held out its worst public ridicule and turned on a murder victim, a mother of four. Spurred on by the confessed killer's lawyers, one social media genius posted, "Bitch deserved it." Deserved what? Deserved to have her sons and daughter grow up without her loving guidance? Deserved to leave her husband of nearly 25 years without a loving partner? Deserved to be the source of anguish for hundreds, literally hundreds, of friends who would mourn her memory for the rest of their lives? No one, least of all Tammy Meyers deserved that.

Murder is always a senseless act, but some acts of murder involve more planning and premeditation than others. Some times, the murder of an individual is done in the heat of the moment. Sometimes tempers flair and death was not the intended outcome. Sometimes murders are completely accidental, arguably. The events of the following story are so far-fetched that it's almost difficult to believe they are true. When two people fear for their lives, anything can happen. And when it came to the events that shook up Las Vegas in 2015, murder was a tragic accident of circumstance.

Every person who rides in a motor vehicle of any kind may well become involved in a road rage incident. Yes, that means every person—doctor, lawyer, teacher, construction worker, minister, every man woman, and child. The road rage epidemic has no limitations. Fasten your seat belts for this book will take you on an enlightening, at times frightening ride through the direct causes and results of road rage. The writing explicitly points out five levels of roadway violence. The book's ultimate goals are: (1) to meet thoughtfully the problems emanating from the epidemic, (2) to understand the best strategies for combating the violence, (3) to join in the declaration of war against America's #1 enemy. There are thirty-five thousand traffic deaths on American roadways every year. There are more than four million injuries from American accidents. Collision costs are exceeding three hundred billion dollars. Lawsuits expenses are astonishing but unattainable because many cases are still pending. Traffic experts know that a large percentage of these devastating statistics can be attributed to road rage. The exact number cannot be ascertained because many people causing the problems flee from the incident scenes. Through head-on revelations, Let's Declare War on Road Rage will bring the reader face-to-face with road rage incidents that happened in locations around the country. They will be very personalized incidents involving common ordinary people who became involved in situations that led to events they might never recover from. The on-the-sight recollections of these incidents ironically open the door to the realization that everyone needs to join the war against road rage, comparable to the devastating effects of road rage, if you join the fight your new knowledge will also be devastating, only this time the victim will be road rage.

“In my world, you are either the hunter or the prey, and I am the hunter. Vegas was my prey. I tell my crew: Vegas makes it, Vigoa takes it.” –Jose Vigoa[pg. 37] When it comes to violent crime, the Las Vegas cops and casino owners thought they had seen it all. But they had never witnessed anything like Jose Vigoa. Born in Cuba, a child of Fidel Castro’s revolution, Vigoa used his quick wits and quicker fists to trade a life of poverty and desperation for one of danger and adventure as a Soviet-trained special forces officer. Battle hardened in the killing fields of Afghanistan and Angola, Vigoa won a reputation for toughness, bravery, and coolness under fire. A brilliant military career lay ahead of him. Then, in 1980, Castro opened Cuba’s floodgates in the Mariel boatlift, and Vigoa, like so many of his countrymen and -women, braved chaos and hardship to start a new life in America’s promised land. But involvement with the drug trade brought his dreams crashing down. Years of prison followed. On his release, Vigoa was determined to take revenge on what he perceived as the corrupt power structure of Las Vegas. On September 20, 1998, the former Spetsnaz lieutenant launched what would be the most audacious and ruthless series of high-profile casino and armored car robberies that Las Vegas had ever seen. In a brazen sixteen-month-long reign of terror, he and his tightly disciplined crew would hit the crème de la crème of Vegas hotels: the MGM, the Desert Inn, the New York-New York, the Mandalay Bay, and the Bellagio. They struck hard and fast, then vanished without a trace. Millions of dollars were stolen. Two brave men were gunned down in cold blood; others were wounded. And yet the robberies were so well planned and executed that the police–“the stupids,” as Vigoa contemptuously referred to them–were all but helpless. Not Lt. John Alamshaw. The twenty-three-year veteran, in charge of robbery detectives, was not giving up so easily. For him, Vigoa’s rampage was a personal affront. And he would do whatever it took, even risk his badge, to bring Vigao down. With exclusive access to all the major players, including Vigoa and Alamshaw, veteran journalist and network producer John Huddy is the perfect man to tell the gripping never-before-told story of this harrowing true-crime drama that will leave readers breathless.
