“A sneakily disturbing, disarmingly profound, casually devastating memoir” of a young writer in NYC—and the fateful turn his life takes on Sept. 11, 2001 (Michael Chabon). In 1998, twenty-four-year-old Bryan Charles came to New York, following the well-trodden path of many before him—pursuing the life of a writer in the storied city far from his Midwestern roots. And like so many of his predecessors, his journey took him into squalid apartments and mind-numbing temp jobs, fleeting romances and dwindling finances, self-doubt and homesickness. He chronicles these experiences with equal parts witty observation and unguarded honesty, reflecting on the life of a solitary soul in a teeming metropolis, struggling to make a living . . . and struggling harder to make it as a writer. His life takes a turn for the better when he lands in a lucrative job that pays the bills, builds his bank account, and buys him a chance to chase his dream—all from the seventieth floor of the World Trade Center. But the next turn his life takes, and which takes the lives of thousands of others, is a destiny-altering nightmare . . . and a call to action that can’t be ignored. “A gripping account told in the muted style of a writer with true authority.” —Publishers Weekly “This is the book I can’t forget . . . insightful, transcendent . . . it knocked me on my ass.” —Library Journal (starred review) “A sneakily disturbing, disarmingly profound, casually devastating memoir, taut and adept, that cracked me up even at its saddest moments, and broke my heart almost without my quite noticing.” —Michael Chabon

Excerpt from The Road to Everywhere What is this strife and worry all about, This building up and tearing down Of things? I know a wood where birds flit in and out, And the west Wind sings. What Of the sobs and hate-words that I hear, This shouting and mad barter in the street? I know a calm hill where the stars seem near And the airs are Sweet. What of the power that passes in a breath, This digging for the buried gates Of Doom? I know a vale where echoes laugh at Death. The Road to Nowhere Leads Everywhere: Tales from the Lands of Arlington Green By: Stephan B. Allen Foregoing her usual opening in an attempt to control the middle of the board with her pawn, it was the Queen’s Knight with which she made her first move; I glanced up from the board to see a smug smile upon her face, as if she were expecting some confusion on my part due to her change of tactics. Nodding my head slightly, I did not comment upon the unusual move on her part. Moving my gaze back to the board, I casually asked, “My lady, do you know why the only piece which can open a game besides a pawn is the Knight?” Caught by surprise at my question, though she maintained her air of superiority, she eventually replied, “I believe it is due to being capable of jumping the pawn, Mr. Ainsley.” Placing my hand upon the piece she assumed I would use for my opening move, I turned my attention away from the board to once again gaze upon her face. While changing to another piece entirely to make a play, I answered matter-of-factly, “Actually, that move is allowed by the rules, My Lady. I should have thought you would have been aware of what those were-my mistake.” Ever wonder what a smug expression looks like when it virtually melts off someone’s face? Play chess with me sometime and find out.
