Set in the fictional 1950s town of Glory, Teds steady maturation is vastly accelerated when a series of brutal murders force him to choose between a trusted confidant and mentor or the status-quo and the rampant racial prejudice that dominates the town. The victims are discovered partially dismembered in shallow graves near his friends home by a survey crew for an improved road that links Glory with the neighboring town of Nirvana. This is a cautionary tale that reminds us that the folly of youth may come back to haunt us. It invokes the boyhood adventure of Tom Sawyer with the courtroom drama of Earl Stanley Gardner while recalling a simpler time. It also recounts the ugliness of society before the term politically correct was a part of our daily lexicon. Theodore Herald, who is at best a devil-may-care youth and at worst a juvenile delinquent, is suddenly thrust into the harsh spotlight of notoriety when he testifies on behalf of his friend. The metamorphosis from gleeful purveyor of skullduggery to responsible adult is like flipping a light switch. Unfortunately, Teds credibility is called into question when his colorful past is revealed. Lives hang in the balance as a deliciously twisted ending unfolds.

Dalle fessure pulsava una tenue luce blu. Tremavo. Non sapevo come ero arrivato davanti quella porta e come ero riuscito a ritornare. Iniziai a vomitare e persi i sensi. Quando ero bambino mio padre mi raccontava la storia del custode delle ombre. Una creatura terrificante dal busto umano, muso di formichiere, ali al posto delle braccia e zoccoli come piedi. Correva e volava lungo un recinto. Custodiva il passaggio tra mondo reale e mondo del sogno. Nel mondo del sogno c'erano tutti i desideri più intimi, le paure più spaventose, i ricordi, le pulsioni dell'umanità che rivivevano nei sogni. Emanavano una luce tanto forte da rendere la creatura quasi cieca. Di tanto in tanto qualcosa da quel luogo sfuggiva, sotto forma di ombra, alla custodia del guardiano, varcava il cancello e giungeva al mondo reale. Così mio padre mi spiegava il risveglio, l'uscita dal mondo dei sogni. Era il suo modo per spiegarmi quelle immagini, quelle parole che non sapevo da dove provenissero. Aprii la scatola e lo vidi per la prima volta. Danzava a mezz'aria. Come un fantasma. Il risveglio di una persona davanti ai miei occhi. Rimasi incollato a quella luce blu che baluginava. Era quello che rimaneva di un sogno, quello che era sfuggito al guardiano. Non sapevo a chi appartenesse né che cosa dovessi farci. Richiusi la scatola e la nascosi. Da allora colleziono ombre. Ecco ciò che raccolgo e colleziono. Scatole di latta che contengono i risvegli di qualcuno. Li custodisco io, il tempo necessario. Vago di posto in posto guidato da una forza a me ignota verso la prossima scatola, verso un altro risveglio. Non so esattamente cosa accada alle persone che lasciano quelle immagini e quelle parole. Mi piace pensare di dar loro sollievo. Certe volte alcuni risvegli svaniscono dalla mia collezione e mi sento leggero. So che un nodo è stato sciolto, il dolore si è tramutato in serenità, la paura di andare avanti è svanita. Forse un giorno accadrà anche a me. E sarà il nirvana.
