On the first day of July 1863, Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia accidentally crossed swords with George Gordon Meade’s federal Army of the Potomac. They clashed at a tiny Pennsylvania crossroads called Gettysburg. Three days later, at least 22,000 Confederate men and boys were dead, wounded or captured, and the Yankees held the field when the river of bloodshed finally stopped. Gettysburg was General Lee’s worst defeat on an open field of battle. In The Court Martial of Robert E. Lee, a discouraged Confederate Congress summons General Lee to Richmond in December 1863, to face a board of inquiry on the Battle of Gettysburg. Through this speculative board of inquiry, the reader is drawn into the true history of the Army of Northern Virginia and the real political personalities and true political intrigue of Richmond in 1863. Will General Lee be relieved of command? Perhaps sent into retirement borne of catastrophic failure, leaving behind forever his beloved Army of Northern Virginia? The reader feels his pain and the anguish of a defeated general who wrote four months after Gettysburg that, “My heart and thoughts will always be with this army.”

This book is a terrific collection of finest re-coloured and restored shots of the men and soldiers of the Great American War. The American Civil War that start the April 12, 1861, it was, with the Crimean Conflict (1854), the first war to be photographed intensively. Americans people for the first time saw vivid and horrific photographs of the terrible effects of the war on his battlefield. The number of Civil War photographs that are available contrasts sharply with the scarcity of pictures from subsequent conflicts such as the Franco-Prussian War, the Italian Risorgimento’s wars, and the various colonial wars before the Boer War. There were a good number of photographers who were present during many of the battles and at other scenes of the American Civil War, and collectively they have provided the world with a visual first hand account of this otherwise fleeting period in American history. Thanks to these dedicated and unselfish pioneers in this new era of photography, men like Mathew Brady. Timothy O’Sullivan, Alexander Gardner, Thomas G.Roche, George S.Cook and others were able to capture a part of the American Civil War that you will never forget. We welcome you to view all our 150 recolored or restored B/W images in this wonderful book!

The 110 letters compiled in Lee's Adjutant shed light on day-to-day life at Lee's headquarters and on the general himself. Written to Taylor's fiancee and family, these letters recount the Army of Northern Virginia's early triumphs, invasions of the North, defeat at Gettysburg, the bloody struggle in the Wilderness, the siege of Petersburg, and final surrender. In them the young officer testifies to the simplicity of Lee's lifestyle as well as the gentility of his demeanor. He describes the bond that developed between himself and the general, and he discusses the furloughs, reports, dispatches, petitions, and grievances that he handled as Lee's alter ego in administrative matters.

If you're a history nerd, you will love this book. It's a firsthand account of the battle at Gettysburg from the perspective of a Young 14-year-old resident who tried to flee the inevitable battle by going to a neighbor's home on the outskirts of town (the Jacob Weikert farm). Instead she ended up square and center of it for the three days, helping care for the wounded in that farmhouse basement. Fascinating. Horrific. Scandalous. It's a super fast read. Bought it at Gettysburg, read it just in two-hour. This is a rich and wonderful variation of the original Tillie's account of the battle. Several great Brady's and other colored photos with incredible details are added. Them make a superb and unmissable book! This book is based on: At Gettysburg, or, What a Girl Saw and Heard of the Battle. A True Narrative. By Mrs. Matilda "Tillie" Pierce Alleman (1848-1914). New York, W. Lake Borland, 1889, and on Soldiershop book: American Civil war 150 years & 150 photos by Luca Stefano Cristini . No effort has been made to modernize or standardize the spelling used in the original text of Mrs. Pierce Alleman.

Robert E Lee Family Collection written by Robert Edward Lee and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1838 with Confederate States of America categories.

The Robert E. Lee Family Collection contains the correspondence and ephemera of Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870), as well as that of his immediate family: wife Mary Custis Lee (1808-1873), daughters Mary (1835-1918), Anne (1839-1862), Agnes (1841-1873), and Mildred (1846-1904), and sons George Washington Custis (1832-1913), William Henry Fitzhugh (1837-1891), and Robert, Jr. (1843-1914). The cornerstone of this collection, and the bulk of the finding aid for it, is devoted to all of the papers of Robert E. Lee held in the manuscript collection of the Eleanor S. Brockenbrough Library. The papers consist of letters, telegrams, and documents written in the hand of or signed by Lee. Also included in this collection are official hand-written copies of letters, telegrams, and documents created under Lee's command as well as those items not created by Lee that are deemed important to his career. In addition, there is a separate list of ephemera (defined here as correspondence and articles on, but not by, Lee and his family) with a cross-reference to those ephemera items that remain elsewhere in the manuscript collection. Spanning a thirty-two year period (1838-1870), the papers reflect the personal and official life of Robert E. Lee. By far the largest portion of the papers relates to Lee's service in the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1865.
