Excerpt from Robert Schumann: Sein Leben und Seine Werke Das Leben unseres grossen Meisters bietet in seinem aussern Verlauf kaum hinreichend Stoff fur eine besondere, eingehende Darstellung. Bis auf das furchtbare Ereigniss, das ihn in den Jahren der reifen, mannlichen Kraft seiner Thatigkeit wie seiner Familie so gewaltsam entriss, zeigt es nur wenig hervorragende Momente und auch diese entziehen sich meist noch einer eingehenden Darstellung aus Grunden schuldiger Rucksicht und Pietat. Noch ist der Kreis derer nicht klein, welche ein hOheres, fast ausschliessliches Becht an sein Leben haben, als die Nation. Ihr gehfat: was er gewirkt und geschaffen, was er ihr an Kunstschatzen zum ewigen Besitz hinterlassen hat; sein Leben dagegen nur, so weit es sich hierin offenbart. Dies sind die Anschauungen, welche mich bei meiner Arbeit leiteten. Ich habe versucht: des Meisters innere Entwicke-lung, wie sie sich in seinen Werken kund thut, und die grosse kunst- und culturgeschichtliche Bedeutung, welche er dadurch errang, darzulegen. Den aussem Verlauf seines Lebens berflck-sichtigte ich nur so weit als er auf jene innere Entwickelung Einfluss gewinnt; als das geschaffene Kunstwerk dadurch ver-standlicher wird. Bei diesem untergeordneteren Theil meiner Arbeit konnte ich mich auf Wasielewsky's mit Fleiss gesam-melte Mittheilungen uber das Leben Schumanns und den yon ihm veroffentlichten Briefwechsel stutzen.
