"A direct method to improve the reliability of a control system with uncertainties may present tremendous implementation and numerical difficulties. The need for alternative methods to generate reliability and robust design in control systems leads the introduction of probability engineering in this area. Most of the studies in robust design use uniform distributions to characterize uncertainties. The proposed idea is to generate a maximum value of an objective function. Techniques used in this study assume a normal probabilistic distribution. The objective is to increase the quality or to reduce the cost of a linear control system by designing it with different values. To complement this study, a reliability-based design for linear and nonlinear systems that uses probability engineering concepts has been developed"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Robust design—that is, managing design uncertainties such as model uncertainty or parametric uncertainty—is the often unpleasant issue crucial in much multidisciplinary optimal design work. Recently, there has been enormous practical interest in strategies for applying optimization tools to the development of robust solutions and designs in several areas, including aerodynamics, the integration of sensing (e.g., laser radars, vision-based systems, and millimeter-wave radars) and control, cooperative control with poorly modeled uncertainty, cascading failures in military and civilian applications, multi-mode seekers/sensor fusion, and data association problems and tracking systems. The contributions to this book explore these different strategies. The expression "optimization-directed” in this book’s title is meant to suggest that the focus is not agonizing over whether optimization strategies identify a true global optimum, but rather whether these strategies make significant design improvements.

Robust Control Design with MATLAB® (second edition) helps the student to learn how to use well-developed advanced robust control design methods in practical cases. To this end, several realistic control design examples from teaching-laboratory experiments, such as a two-wheeled, self-balancing robot, to complex systems like a flexible-link manipulator are given detailed presentation. All of these exercises are conducted using MATLAB® Robust Control Toolbox 3, Control System Toolbox and Simulink®. By sharing their experiences in industrial cases with minimum recourse to complicated theories and formulae, the authors convey essential ideas and useful insights into robust industrial control systems design using major H-infinity optimization and related methods allowing readers quickly to move on with their own challenges. The hands-on tutorial style of this text rests on an abundance of examples and features for the second edition: • rewritten and simplified presentation of theoretical and methodological material including original coverage of linear matrix inequalities; • new Part II forming a tutorial on Robust Control Toolbox 3; • fresh design problems including the control of a two-rotor dynamic system; and • end-of-chapter exercises. Electronic supplements to the written text that can be downloaded from extras.springer.com/isbn include: • M-files developed with MATLAB® help in understanding the essence of robust control system design portrayed in text-based examples; • MDL-files for simulation of open- and closed-loop systems in Simulink®; and • a solutions manual available free of charge to those adopting Robust Control Design with MATLAB® as a textbook for courses. Robust Control Design with MATLAB® is for graduate students and practising engineers who want to learn how to deal with robust control design problems without spending a lot of time in researching complex theoretical developments.

Most existing robust design books address design for static systems, or achieve robust design from experimental data via the Taguchi method. Little work considers model information for robust design particularly for the dynamic system. This book covers robust design for both static and dynamic systems using the nominal model information or the hybrid model/data information, and also integrates design with control under a large operating region. This design can handle strong nonlinearity and more uncertainties from model and parameters.

Many plants have large variations in operating conditions. To ensure smooth running it is essential to find a simple fixed gain controller that guarantees rapidly decaying and well-damped transients for all admissible operating conditions. Robust Control presents design tools, developed by the authors, for the solution of this design problem. Examples of simple and complex cases such as a crane, a flight control problem and the automatic and active four-wheel steering of a car illustrate the use of these tools. This book is intended for anyone who has taken an undergraduate course in feedback control systems and who seeks an advanced treatment of robust control with applications. Drawing on the resources and authoritative research of a leading aerospace institute, it will mainly be of interest to mechanical and electrical engineers in universities, institutes and industrial research centres.

Successfully classroom-tested at the graduate level, Linear Control Theory: Structure, Robustness, and Optimization covers three major areas of control engineering (PID control, robust control, and optimal control). It provides balanced coverage of elegant mathematical theory and useful engineering-oriented results. The first part of the book develops results relating to the design of PID and first-order controllers for continuous and discrete-time linear systems with possible delays. The second section deals with the robust stability and performance of systems under parametric and unstructured uncertainty. This section describes several elegant and sharp results, such as Kharitonov’s theorem and its extensions, the edge theorem, and the mapping theorem. Focusing on the optimal control of linear systems, the third part discusses the standard theories of the linear quadratic regulator, Hinfinity and l1 optimal control, and associated results. Written by recognized leaders in the field, this book explains how control theory can be applied to the design of real-world systems. It shows that the techniques of three term controllers, along with the results on robust and optimal control, are invaluable to developing and solving research problems in many areas of engineering.

Robust Industrial Control Systems: Optimal Design Approach for Polynomial Systems presents a comprehensive introduction to the use of frequency domain and polynomial system design techniques for a range of industrial control and signal processing applications. The solution of stochastic and robust optimal control problems is considered, building up from single-input problems and gradually developing the results for multivariable design of the later chapters. In addition to cataloguing many of the results in polynomial systems needed to calculate industrial controllers and filters, basic design procedures are also introduced which enable cost functions and system descriptions to be specified in order to satisfy industrial requirements. Providing a range of solutions to control and signal processing problems, this book: * Presents a comprehensive introduction to the polynomial systems approach for the solution of H_2 and H_infinity optimal control problems. * Develops robust control design procedures using frequency domain methods. * Demonstrates design examples for gas turbines, marine systems, metal processing, flight control, wind turbines, process control and manufacturing systems. * Includes the analysis of multi-degrees of freedom controllers and the computation of restricted structure controllers that are simple to implement. * Considers time-varying control and signal processing problems. * Addresses the control of non-linear processes using both multiple model concepts and new optimal control solutions. Robust Industrial Control Systems: Optimal Design Approach for Polynomial Systems is essential reading for professional engineers requiring an introduction to optimal control theory and insights into its use in the design of real industrial processes. Students and researchers in the field will also find it an excellent reference tool.

This paper presents a reliability- and robustness-based formulation for robust control synthesis for systems with probabilistic uncertainty. In a reliability-based formulation, the probability of violating design requirements prescribed by inequality constraints is minimized. In a robustness-based formulation, a metric which measures the tendency of a random variable/process to cluster close to a target scalar/function is minimized. A multi-objective optimization procedure, which combines stability and performance requirements in time and frequency domains, is used to search for robustly optimal compensators. Some of the fundamental differences between the proposed strategy and conventional robust control methods are: (i) unnecessary conservatism is eliminated since there is not need for convex supports, (ii) the most likely plants are favored during synthesis allowing for probabilistic robust optimality, (iii) the tradeoff between robust stability and robust performance can be explored numerically, (iv) the uncertainty set is closely related to parameters with clear physical meaning, and (v) compensators with improved robust characteristics for a given control structure can be synthesized.Crespo, Luis G. and Kenny, Sean P.Langley Research CenterROBUSTNESS (MATHEMATICS); CONTROLLERS; PROBABILITY THEORY; CONTROL SYSTEMS DESIGN; RANDOM VARIABLES; SCALARS; TARGETS; TRADEOFFS; STABILITY; OPTIMIZATION
