This book investigates a problem of robust resource allocation for distributed computing systems operating under QoS constraints. Often, such systems function in a physical environment replete with uncertainty causing the amount of processing required over time to fluctuate substantially. The first two chapters show how an effective resource allocation can be achieved in the shipboard distributed computing system and IBM cluster based imaging system. The general form of stochastic robustness metric is presented next, where the relationship between uncertainty in system and its impact on performance are linked stochastically. The utility of the established metric is exploited for the large class of distributed systems operating on periodically updated data sets. One of the major reasons for possible QoS violations in distributed systems is a loss of resources, frequently caused by abnormal operating conditions. The last chapter describes a solution method based on the concepts of the Derman- Lieberman- Ross theorem. The experimental results indicate a significant potential of this approach to generate robust resource allocations in unstable distributed systems.

Distributed computing systems utilize various resources with different capabilities to satisfy the requirements of diverse task mixtures and to maximize the system performance. Such systems often operate in an environment where certain desired performance features degrade due to unpredictable circumstances, such as higher than expected work load or inaccuracies in the estimation of task and system parameters. Thus, when resources are allocated to tasks it is desirable to do this in a way that makes the system performance on these tasks robust against unpredictable changes. The system is considered robust if the actual makespan under the perturbed conditions does not exceed the required time constraint. The goal is to maximize the collective allowable error in execution time estimation for the tasks that can occur without the makespan exceeding the constraint.

Lately, distributed computing (DC) has emerged in several application scenarios such as grid computing, high-performance and reconfigurable computing, wireless sensor networks, peer-to-peer networks, and donation grids. When DC is performed in these scenarios, the distributed computing system (DCS) supporting the applications not only exhibits heterogeneous computing resources and a significant communication latency, but also becomes highly dynamic due to the communication network as well as the computing servers are affected by a wide class of anomalies that change the topology of the system in a random fashion. These anomalies exhibit spatial and/ortemporal correlation, may inflict a large amount of damage to the system, and induce further failures in other servers. In order to provide a robust DC environment in the presence of component failures, it is key to develop a general framework for accuratelymodeling the complex dynamics of a DCS. In this book a general probabilistic approach has been undertaken for modeling and characterizing the performance and reliability of a general class of DCS
