Nikolai Roerich was born on October 9th, 1874 in Saint-Petersburg. After studying law and attending the Academy of Art, Roerich developed a passionate interest in archaeology, his contribution to which was acknowledged when he became a lecturer at the Russian Archaeological Society in 1900. His extensive travels in Europe, Russia, Asia, and especially India were a source of inspiration wholly original and unique. The prolific creator of over 7000 paintings, Roerich belonged to the great creative art movement which took place in Russia before the Bolshevik revolution. Besides his enormous artistic talent, Roerich was the author of the Pact which bears his name and which was designed to protect the cultural heritage in time of war. After living a very full life, he died in the Kulu valley in India in 1947. Recognized in 1923, there is a museum in New York devoted to him. He wrote numerous books and collections of poetry, and contributed to artistic and archaeological journals. Roerich, with his huge and versatile talent, is one of the most interesting creative minds of the early 20th century. Some fine examples of his art are to be found in ""La Balance"" and ""Loukomori"" in the 1905 work of M. Maeterlinck, in stage sets for Rimsky Korsakov's Snegurochka, Paris 1909, and in sets and costumes for Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, 1910-1921.

In this first volume of his study of two influential Eastern streams, Prokofieff considers the spiritual movement of Agni Yoga, as presented to the world by Helena Roerich and her husband, the painter Nicholas Roerich. Helena Roerich developed Agni Yoga, or "Living Ethics, " in fourteen published volumes, which she believed to have been directly dictated by Eastern Masters. By relating the inspiration Helena Roerich received to that of the later teachings of H. P. Blavatsky, Prokofieff is able to penetrate the occult foundations of this stream. George Roerich (1902–1960) was a prominent Russian scientist, orientalist, linguist and encyclopaedist of the 20th century, a worthy successor to the traditions of Russian Oriental Studies. His books on Tibetan Studies, Indology and Mongolian Studies, published in various countries and in different languages, have long been considered classics of orientalism. His name figures in the list of honorary members of numerous scientific societies in Europe, Asia and America. He not only had a comprehensive knowledge of history, archaeology, literature, ethnography, religion, and cultural studies, but also knew more than 30 Eastern and Western languages perfectly; these were not only classical European and Eastern languages, but also indigenous Indian and Tibetan dialects. This allowed him to communicate freely with Asian people, to understand their cultural traditions, and to achieve deep insights in his dialogues with them.

Nicholas Roerich, the well-known Russian artist, writer and mystic from the early twentieth century is best known in the West for his theatrical design work, above all for the sets of the celebrated ballet The Rite of Springs. The goal of this thesis is to provide a fuller understanding of Roerich's art and literary works within the historical context of his time. In particular, I have sought to illuminate Roerich's focus on depiction of nature, especially mountains, in relation to his fascination with the mythical Shambhala. In the first chapter of this thesis I analyze Roerich's early career, as well as his personal and professional relationship with the World of Art, the leading art group at the turn of the twentieth century in Russia. Roerich's early interest in the history of ancient Russia, archeology and geology, which I discuss, was central to the meaning of his landscape depictions in both his stage designs and paintings. The second chapter of this work investigates how these interests evolved into the artist's quest for Eastern wisdom and mystical revelations. Although Roerich is often treated as an oddity, his concerns with occult ideas were not unique in his time. The third chapter focuses on Roerich's activities abroad and his international success as a promoter of ancient wisdom. I discuss the Russian émigré art scene in New York in the 1920s and Roerich's place within it. I also offer an examination of the artist's correspondence with his family and colleagues, which sheds light on Roerich's beliefs in his mysterious "Teachers" and their role in leading him to the East.
