The essays in this volume in honour of Martin Brett address issues relating to the compilation and transmission of canon law collections, the role of bishops in their dissemination, as well as the interpretation and use of law in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The studies are grouped thematically under the headings 'Bishops and Their Texts', and 'Texts and the Use of Canon Law'. These reflect important areas of contention in the historiographical literature and hence will further the debates regarding not simply the compilation and dissemination of canonical collections in the earlier middle ages, but also the development of the practical application of canon law within Europe, especially after c.1080. Individually, the contributors offer new viewpoints on key issues and questions relating to the creation of canonical texts, their transmission and use on both sides of the English Channel in the decades either side of the year 1100. Collectively, the essays explore the methods and motives of compilers, assess the use of law, find readers both in the compilation of texts and within their margins, and - perhaps most importantly - speculate where possible about the living communities in which these texts were compiled, copied and used.

Byrhtferth of Ramsey was one of the most learned scholars of late Anglo-Saxon England, and his two saints' Lives-of Oswald, a powerful bishop of Worcester and York in the tenth century (d. 992), and Ecgwine, the seventh-century founder of Evesham-are among the most important historical sources for our understanding of late Anglo-Saxon England. The Life of St Oswald is the longest surviving work of Anglo-Saxon hagiography, and it is the principal source for much of our knowledge of tenth-century England, especially the monastic reform movement, the role of King Edgar, the murder of Edward king and Martyr, and the so-called 'anti-monastic reaction' (of which he is the unique witness). Much less is known about St Ecgwine, both by us and by Byrhtferth, but Byrhtferth's writing has exceptional value once again for the light it throws on tenth-century monasticism and the role of King Edgar in this process. Both Lives have been printed only once before, in the nineteenth century, in editions which are riddled with errors and which have misled scholarship for over a century. Neither work has ever been translated into English. The present edition includes facing-page translations, which will make these works accessible to a scholarly audience for the first time. Byrhtferth's Latin is unusually idiosyncratic and difficult, and was frequently misunderstood by the scribe who copied the unique manuscript in which the Lives are preserved. The texts are also accompanied by extensive notes, which explain the historical implications and the often impenetrable Latin. One of the principal features of the new edition is that corruption in the transmitted text has been emended where necessary, based on knowledge of Byrhtferth's Latin style (analysed, for example, in the EETS edition of Byrhtferth's Enchiridion, ed. Lapidge and Baker in 1994). A new edition of Byrhtferth's two saints' Lives has been long awaited, and will be indispensable to the study of Anglo-Saxon history and literature; the texts also throw considerable new light on the archaeology of Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical sites such as York, Worcester, Ramsey and Evesham.

Many of the millions of medieval charters surviving in European archives and repositories were written without any reference to a date of issue. The proliferation of undated charters in England and Normandy indicates that the custom was especially peculiar to lands under Norman rule, but charters issued by major religious houses are often also undated. The DEEDS Project at the University of Toronto has developed a computerised methodology for dating charters, relying on analysis of vocabulary, syntax and formulae. In this volume an international group of scholars concerned with the problem of charter chronology consider the potential of the computerised methodology compared to other more traditional methods of dating, such as identification of names, changing in wording and address, and handwriting. Discussion also touches on regional differences in the production, use and distribution of charters, and on ways both manual and mechanical to date and analyse the content of large numbers of them. The registers of Archbishop Mepham and his successor Stratford were apparently lost, or more likely stolen, in the later Middle Ages. Stratford had been bishop of Winchester for some ten years, consequently much more is known about his activity in the episcopal office. Mepham by contrast is somewhat of an enigma. He came into office with an academic training in the wake of Walter Reynolds, who did not attend a university but was experienced in secular affairs and had been a confidant of the king when Prince of Wales. Unusually Mepham was elected by the Christ Church chapter and not provided by the pope. Bereft of political experience, he was unlucky in the time of his promotion, a period of struggle between the Mortimer/Isabella and Lancastrian factions, with the young Edward III a pawn, virtually powerless to influence events. It was only towards the end of 1330 that the king came into his own thanks to a coup dtat. Thereafter Mephams attempts to exert his metropolitan authority and his lack of wisdom in avoiding conflict led to his sad denouement. Fortunately we know quite a lot about his more combative activities thanks to the chroniclers, particularly Dene, the reputed author of the Historia Roffensis, and the St. Augustines chronicler Thorne. In the eighteenth century Ducarel collected a large number of documents relating to the archiepiscopates of Mepham and Stratford, while others have come to light with the publication of the Episcopal registers of his contemporaries. In 1997 my article An Innocent Abroad: The Career of Simon Mepham, Archbishop of Canterbury 1328-1333, was published in the English Historical Review. The Release of Ornaments in the Archbishops chapel and some other arrangements following Simon Mephams elevation, appeared in Archaeologia Cantiana in 2002. Since that time I have examined the Canterbury Act Books relative to that period and prepared an edition of Stratfords Winchester register, which has made it possible considerably to expand the study of Mepham. This is the first of two volumes, now covering the heads of religious houses in England and Wales from the tenth-century reform to the death of Edward III, 940–1377. This first volume, by the great master of monastic history, Dom David Knowles, aided by Christopher Brooke and Vera London, was published first in 1972 and was quickly recognised as a major work of reference, noted for its mastery of accurate detail. It has now been brought up to date with substantial addenda and corrigenda by Christopher Brooke. The 1972 volume covers the period 940–1216, and comprises fully documented, critical lists of monastic superiors, with succinct biographical details. It is an essential foundation for all prosopographical study of the religious history of the period; and the precise chronology that it underpins is invaluable for dating innumerable undated documents. As such, the book is a fundamental tool of medieval research.
