Sinodalitas, menurut maknanya yang paling dasar, sebagai suatu “berjalan bersama”, sudah menjadi bagian hidup Gereja sejak awal mula. Sinodalitas menunjuk corak gaya khusus hidup dan perutusan Gereja, dan sekaligus mengungkapkan sifat Gereja sebagai umat Allah yang berjalan bersama-sama dan berkumpul dalam pertemuan, yang dipanggil Tuhan dalam daya kuasa Roh Kudus untuk mewartakan Injil. Tema sinodalitas adalah “Bagi Gereja Sinodal: Persekutuan, Partisipasi, dan Misi”, Fokus tema persekutuan, partisipasi dan misi, mengajak setiap orang beriman untuk melihat dan merefleksikan pengalaman hidup menggereja selama ini, untuk bersama-sama saling mendengarkan satu sama lain: apa yang dikatakan Roh Kudus dalam hidup kemuridan mengikuti Tuhan Yesus Kristus. Banyak pertanyaan mengiringi proses sinodalitas Gereja ini. Apa sebenarnya makna dasar Gereja Sinodal itu? Manakah dasar-dasar Kitab Suci dan ajaran Gereja mengenai sinodalitas Gereja ini? Apakah sinodalitas Gereja sudah ada dan terjadi dalam konteks umat Perjanjian Lama, Gereja Perdana, Gereja abad-abad pertama hingga abad pertengahan dan zaman modern hingga Gereja masa kini? Bagaimana Gereja menghayati sinodalitasnya dalam dinamika sejarah yang diwarnai oleh berbagai peristiwa yang tidak selalu mudah dihadapi, seperti: bidaah, skisma (perpecahan), ketegangan antarkelompok (konservatif, progresif, moderat, dan sebagainya)? Sementara itu, pertanyaan mendasar lain ialah dari aspek-aspek yang lebih luas lagi, seperti: aspek filosofis, sosial dan politis, kultural, yuridis, atau pun dalam hubungannya dengan agama-agama lain. Pertanyaan-pertanyaan itu pantas direnungkan dan dijawab. Untuk itulah, buku ini hadir. Ditulis oleh para ahli dari berbagai tempat di Indonesia, yang umumnya adalah para dosen dari lembaga pendidikan tinggi, baik dari kalangan Negeri, Katolik, maupun Protestan.
