The role of the Air Force first sergeant is one of the most important positions in a military unit. As a focal point of enlisted readiness, morale, health, welfare, and discipline, the first sergeant is a principal advisor to the commander in preparing a mission-ready force. First sergeants are on call 24/7 and face multiple unit issues such as military or dependent deaths, financial issues, sexual assault, illegal drug use, adultery, suicides, and other miscellaneous infractions. The first sergeant special duty is extremely demanding and requires the best each first sergeant has to offer every day as leaders to the enlisted corps. From the perspective of one first sergeant to another, Hamp Lee III shares Twenty Essentials for the Air Force First Sergeant. In this book, he provides helpful information and tools to navigate first sergeants through their years of serving American Airmen. From topics such as time management, personal integrity, and even bad days to issue discipline, Twenty Essentials for the Air Force First Sergeant will ensure a first sergeant’s mission of making Airmen their business will be a successful one.

A large number of First Sergeants do not have the opportunity to attend the First Sergeant Course. Yet, on the job, these First Sergeants are confronted with a myriad of requirements for which they are not adequately prepared. There are over 4200 First Sergeants in the United States Army. Currently, approximately 300 attend the First Sergeant Course annually. It is anticipated that 600 will attend in the United States and Europe in calendar year 1983; 1200 in 1985. Effective non-resident support must be provided to assist the large number of First Sergeants unable to attend the course. The development of a First Sergeant Guidebook was proposed to address this problem. The Guidebook is comprised of the 55 job aids and annotated indices to guide the inexperienced First Sergeant. This Guidebook will serve both as an aid to uninstructed First Sergeants and as a supplement to the First Sergeant Course, providing a way of supporting academic training in the unit; a link between formal education and on-the-job functioning. The platoon leader and platoon sergeant are two of the most important leaders in the U.S. Army. The way platoon leaders and sergeants work together as a team can cause the success or failure of companies, battalions, brigades, and divisions. They represent the leading edge of leadership on and off the battlefield. On the battlefield, platoon leaders and sergeants build their platoons, empower squad leaders, integrate outside elements, and use troop-leading procedures to plan and lead. Off the battlefield, platoon leaders and sergeants prepare their platoon for combat through tough training. The platoon leader and platoon sergeant's ability to coach, teach, and mentor their Soldiers leads directly to the readiness of our formations. World-wide, platoon leaders and sergeants are personally leading the U.S. Army at the lowest level. This handbook is a guide for new leaders to help prepare them for a critical crucible of leadership that will determine the U.S. Army's ability to fight and win our country's wars.
