The entire political, economic, and social structure was turned on its head." "Many Pakeha believed they were losing control of their destiny. For Maori this had been an unacceptable reality for over 150 years. By 1993 Aotearoa/New Zealand had become a nation in crisis." The State Is Rolling Back, the second volume of Liberty Fund’s The Collected Works of Arthur Seldon, brings together a comprehensive collection of fifty-four articles reflecting Arthur Seldon’s scholarly development. By the late twentieth century, Arthur Seldon was one of the most powerful exponents of classical liberalism, helping to stimulate its revival, through both his own writings and the publications of the London-based Institute of Economic Affairs, of which he was Editorial Director for more than 30 years. First published in 1994, this book collects virtually all of Seldon’s major ideas and his proposals for reform. In its totality, The State Is Rolling Back demonstrates Seldon’s long-standing advocacy and commitment to free-market reforms and includes his earliest, barbed criticisms of the "welfare state.” The entire series includes: Volume 1: The Virtues of Capitalism (September 2004) Volume 2: The State Is Rolling Back (November 2004) Volume 3: Everyman's Dictionary of Economics (January 2005) Volume 4: Introducing Market Forces into "Public" Services (February 2005) Volume 5: Government Failure and Over-Government (May 2005) Volume 6: The Welfare State: Pensions, Health, and Education (October 2005) Volume 7: The IEA, the LSE, and the Influence of Ideas (December 2005)

Public Sector Economics written by Stephen J. Bailey and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-01 with Finance, Public categories.

The aim of this book is to provide a rather more comprehensive wide-ranging treatment of public sector economics than is usual. It deals with theory, policy and practice within the broad context of political economy and attempts a more general integration of them than is found in most other texts. It recognises that students invariably study other subjects simultaneously with economics, aiming to provide more of a multi-disciplinary approach than is usually the case. The book reflects the changing nature of 'public' in recognising that a textbook in this area has to be made less technical and mechanistic and more appreciative of political economy.

This collection examines the social and cultural legacy of Thatcherism in the 21st century. Drawing upon perspectives from a range of disciplines, it considers how Thatcherism manifests itself today and how we can assess its long-term impact. The book is divided into four sections, which offer different ways of conceptualising and addressing questions of legacy: the ideological impact of Thatcherism on the Conservative Party and on the country; the long-term impact of Thatcherism across different parts of the UK; how Thatcherism has altered social attitudes to everything from welfare spending to Europe; and how popular historical accounts of Thatcherism have become embedded in different parts of contemporary British culture. The essays in this volume draw upon newly available archival materials, oral histories, social attitudes surveys and parliamentary debates to provide a well-rounded perspective on Thatcherism today.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,0 (A), Stellenbosch Universitiy (Department of Economics), course: Modern Economic Systems and Global Capitalizm, 23 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: What has happened, that still has an influence on recent policy of even more left-winged parties as Labour in Britain as the following statement shows? "The Labour (Party) has moved to the right since 1983 is undeniable (...). Is it best explained as an updating of socialism in the face of modernity? Or else as Tory clothes-stealing, a necessary or unnecessary concession to political enemies in the interest of securing an electoral victory?"2 Therefore the goal of this thesis will be to fathom the position of this new economic agenda, called 'New-Right', which has at a stretch been adopted by the most former left from the centre positioned parties in the Western World. Of which kind is this strong ideology that caused the crisis of the "New Left" by cutting back the state and the welfare state. This thesis shall furthermore give an idea to what extend did Thatcherism influence the observable substantial change and to what extend were the targets of this ideology achieved successfully or not. But to do so, it is first necessary to give an short overview on the development of state intervention in the shape of the welfare state with a main focus on Britain. Accordingly main economic thoughts and their ideology on social welfare will be illuminated briefly. After elementary information is provided Thatcherism, meaning its ideas, ideology, main aims and critics of interventionalism will be introduced. By doing so it will be possible to evaluate how successful Mrs. Thatcher and the Tories were in rolling back the state. To conclude the recent situation of the "New Left" as political agenda will be touched on.

Short Circuiting Policy written by Leah Cardamore Stokes and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-18 with Political Science categories.

In 1999, Texas passed a landmark clean energy law, beginning a groundswell of new policies that promised to make the US a world leader in renewable energy. As Leah Stokes shows in Short Circuiting Policy, however, that policy did not lead to momentum in Texas, which failed to implement its solar laws or clean up its electricity system. Examining clean energy laws in Texas, Kansas, Arizona, and Ohio over a thirty-year time frame, Stokes argues that organized combat between advocate and opponent interest groups is central to explaining why states are not on track to address the climate crisis. She tells the political history of our energy institutions, explaining how fossil fuel companies and electric utilities have promoted climate denial and delay. Stokes further explains the limits of policy feedback theory, showing the ways that interest groups drive retrenchment through lobbying, public opinion, political parties and the courts. More than a history of renewable energy policy in modern America, Short Circuiting Policy offers a bold new argument about how the policy process works, and why seeming victories can turn into losses when the opposition has enough resources to roll back laws.

The Politics Of Public Sector Performance written by Michael Roll and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-10 with Political Science categories.

It is widely believed that the state in developing countries is weak. The public sector, in particular, is often regarded as corrupt and dysfunctional. This book provides an urgently needed corrective to such overgeneralized notions of bad governance in the developing world. It examines the variation in state capacity by looking at a particularly paradoxical and frequently overlooked phenomenon: effective public organizations or ‘pockets of effectiveness’ in developing countries. Why do these pockets exist? How do they emerge and survive in hostile environments? And do they have the potential to trigger more comprehensive reforms and state-building? This book provides surprising answers to these questions, based on detailed case studies of exceptional public organizations and state-owned enterprises in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Middle East. The case studies are guided by a common analytical framework that is process-oriented and sensitive to the role of politics. The concluding comparative analysis develops a novel explanation for why some public organizations in the developing world beat the odds and turn into pockets of public sector performance and service delivery while most do not. This book will be of strong interest to students and scholars of political science, sociology, development, organizations, public administration, public policy and management.
