Germania was one of the most important and complex zones of cultural interaction and conflict between Rome and neighbouring societies. A vast region, it became divided into urbanised provinces with elaborate military frontiers and the northern part of the continental 'Barbaricum'. Recent decades have seen a major effort by German archaeologists, ancient historians, epigraphers, numismatists, and other specialists to explore the Roman era in their own territory, with rich and often surprising new knowledge. This Handbook aims to make the results of this great effort of modern German and overwhelmingly German-language scholarship more widely available to Anglophone scholarship on the empire. Archaeology and ancient history are international enterprises characterised by specific national scholarly traditions; this is notably true of the study of Roman-era Germania. This volume compromises a collection of essays in English by leading scholars working in Germany, presenting the latest developments in current research as well as situating their work within wider international scholarship through a series of critical responses from other, very different, national perspectives. In doing so, this book aims to reveal the riches of the archaeology of Roman Germany, promote the achievements of German scholars in the area, and help facilitate continued English and German language discourses on the Roman era.

Written in the author's maternal Greek, the Roman History of the third-century A.D. historian Cassius Dio is our fullest surviving historical source for the reign of the Emperor Augustus. In The Augustan Succession Peter Michael Swan provides an ample historical and historiographic commentary on Books 55-56 of the History. These books recount Augustus's last twenty-three years (9 B.C.-A.D. 14), during which the aging monarch, amid dynastic tragedies and military setbacks, orchestrated the continuation of the constitutional and imperial system developed under his leadership, which ended in his transmission of power to his son-in-law Tiberius. The Augustan Succession is the first commentary since the eighteenth century to offer full and fresh treatment of this segment of Dio's work. This commentary pays close critical attention to Dio's historical sources, methods, and assumptions as it also strives to present him as a figure in his own right. During a long life (ca. 164-after 229), Dio served as a Roman senator under seven emperors from Commodus to Severus Alexander, governed three Roman provinces, and was twice consul. An acute and interested contemporary observer of wide experience, positioned close to the seat of imperial power, he was a self-assured personality who embodied deeply conservative political and social views and prejudices. All these factors inform the pages of Dio's Augustan narrative, as does, above all, his doctrine that the best remedy for the troubles of his own age of "rust and iron" was rule on the model of Augustus. This is an historical commentary on Books 55-56 of Dio's Roman History. These books recount the last half of the reign of the Emperor Augustus, above all his orchestration of the first imperial succession. Addressed to both students and scholars, the new commentary is the first since the eighteenth century to offer full and fresh treatment of this segment of Dio's work.

Materialising the Roman Empire defines an innovative research agenda for Roman archaeology, highlighting the diverse ways in which the Empire was made materially tangible in the lives of its inhabitants. The volume explores how material culture was integral to the processes of imperialism, both as the Empire grew, and as it fragmented, and in doing so provide up-to-date overviews of major topics in Roman archaeology. Each chapter offers a critical overview of a major field within the archaeology of the Roman Empire. The book’s authors explore the distinctive contribution that archaeology and the study of material culture can make to our understanding of the key institutions and fields of activity in the Roman Empire. The initial chapters address major technologies which, at first glance, appear to be mechanisms of integration across the Roman Empire: roads, writing and coinage. Der Autor befasst sich mit einem Thema, das in der jüngsten Forschung auf der Grundlage neuer archäologischer Befunde und veränderter Forschungslage wieder in den Mittelpunkt gerückt ist: Welche Ziele verfolgte Augustus in Germanien? Da nur das linksrheinische Germanien dauerhaft unter römische Kontrolle geriet, liegt der Schwerpunkt der Betrachtung auf den letztlich gescheiterten Versuchen Roms, im rechtsrheinischen Germanien (Germania magna) Fuß zu fassen. In der Einleitung werden zunächst der Begriff der (Außen-)Politik und die Formen römischer Herrschaft sowie der Wert der einschlägigen historiographischen Quellen diskutiert. Anschließend erfolgt eine Skizze des militärischen Vorgehens der Römer in Germanien. Da die historiographische Überlieferung zum Thema sehr dünn ist, wurden seit jeher in der Forschung unterschiedliche und sich geradezu widersprechende Auffassungen hinsichtlich der Pläne des Augustus vertreten. Im ersten Hauptteil der Arbeit charakterisiert der Autor vier heute vertretene Forschungsrichtungen zur Germanienpolitik, bevor er die jüngsten Auffassungen von Eck und Eich vorstellt. Grundsätzlich stellt sich die Frage, ob Rom nur situativ reagierte oder ob Augustus einen Plan verfolgte. Anhand archäologischer und literarischer Quellenbelege schließt sich der Autor der Auffassung an, dass dem Vorgehen der Römer ein Plan zugrunde lag. Damit stellt sich nun weiter die Frage, welche Absichten der Kaiser verfolgte. Im zweiten Hauptteil stellt der Autor eine der eingangs vorgestellten Herrschaftsformen in den Mittelpunkt und fragt mit Eck, ob das Ziel des Augustus die Einrichtung einer Provinz gewesen sei. Zunächst klärt er den Begriff der „Provinz“, um in einem zweiten Schritt die historiographische Überlieferung daraufhin zu untersuchen, ob diese Hinweise auf Provinzialisierungsmaßnahmen enthält. Im größten Teil des Kapitels stellt der Autor dann die Befunde der neueren archäologischen Forschungen in den rechtsrheinischen römischen Standorten vor und diskutiert in diesem Zusammenhang die Indizien, die auf eine dauerhafte Annexion Germanien als Provinz hindeuten könnten (permanente militärische Besatzung, Statthaltersitz, Rechtsprechung, Infrastrukturmaßnahmen, Tribute, wirtschaftliche Investitionen der Römer und Kaiserkult). Dabei spricht nach Auffassung des Autors vieles dafür, dass Augustus vor der clades Variana die Provinzialisierung des rechtsrheinischen Germanien betrieb.

Die allgemeinen Vorstellungen in unserer Gesellschaft vom Leben im alten Germanien der ersten Jahrhunderte n. Chr. beruhen immer noch auf den Darstellungen in den Schriftquellen der antiken Historiker seit Caesar und Tacitus. Doch inzwischen erlauben die Ergebnisse der Archäologie über Ausgrabungen und neue Auswertungen ihrer Quellen, der Siedlungen, Kultplätze und Gräberfelder ein völlig anderes Bild zu beschreiben. Zwar gibt es eine Fülle von Publikationen zu den Germanen von Historikern, doch diese schildern die Inhalte der antiken Texte und nehmen archäologische Objekte höchstens als Illustration. Dieses Buch dreht den Spieß um, beschreibt die neuartigen Ergebnisse der Archäologie und ergänzt nur dann und wann als Illustration mit historischen Fakten der Ereignisgeschichte die Schilderung. In zwei Abschnitten werden einerseits die neuen archäologischen Fakten erzählt und andererseits in einer Reihe von Thesen die Vorteile und Topoi der antiken Quellen entlarvt, z.B. gab es große Dörfer aus 20 Gehöften in offenen Landschaften, also nicht in finsterem Wald, die über eine beachtliche Wirtschaftskraft verfügten. Sie stellten zahlreiche Kriegerverbände, weshalb Rom Germanien nicht erobern konnte.

'Barbarians' is the name the Romans gave to those who lived beyond the frontiers of the Roman Empire - the peoples they considered 'uncivilised'. Most of the written sources concerning the barbarians come from the Romans too, and as such, need to be treated with caution.
