This text aims to present and discuss the innovative Volvo Uddevalla plant, comparing it to other plants - Japanese lean ones and others. The starting point for the book is Volvo's dramatic decision to close its Uddevalla and Kalmar plants, and the debate that followed this decision, both in Sweden and abroad. Both plants were pioneers of the possibilities to unite productivity and the good work, but, following the announcement of their closure, researchers and practitioners in the field of industrial organization from many countries asked why they closed, how they compared with other production concepts, and whether we now see an end of an alternative to Japanese lean production.

The Shape Of Time written by George Kubler and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-04-17 with Art categories.

When it was first released in 1962, The Shape of Time presented a radically new approach to the study of art history. Drawing upon new insights in fields such as anthropology and linguistics, George Kubler replaced the notion of style as the basis for histories of art with the concept of historical sequence and continuous change across time. Kubler’s classic work is now made available in a freshly designed edition. “The Shape of Time is as relevant now as it was in 1962. This book, a sober, deeply introspective, and quietly thrilling meditation on the flow of time and space and the place of objects within a larger continuum, adumbrates so many of the critical and theoretical concerns of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. It is both appropriate and necessary that it re-appear in our consciousness at this time.”—Edward J. Sullivan, New York University This book will be of interest to all students of art history and to those concerned with the nature and theory of history in general. In a study of formal and symbolic durations the author presents a radically new approach to the problem of historical change. Using new ideas in anthropology and linguistics, he pursues such questions as the nature of time, the nature of change, and the meaning of invention. The result is a view of historical sequence aligned on continuous change more than upon the static notion of style—the usual basis for conventional histories of art. A carefully reasoned and brilliantly suggestive essay in defense of the view that the history of art can be the study of formal relationships, as against the view that it should concentrate on ideas of symbols or biography.—Harper's.It is a most important achievement, and I am sure that it will be studies for many years in many fields. I hope the book upsets people and makes them reformulate.—James Ackerman. In this brief and important essay, George Kubler questions the soundness of the stylistic basis of art historical studies. . . . The Shape of Time ably states a significant position on one of the most complex questions of modern art historical scholarship.—Virginia Quarterly Review.

International multi-award winning architect, Romaldo Giurgoila (b. Rome, 1920) is best known in Australia as the principal architect of the New Parliament House in Canberra. His latest major work is St. Patricks Cathedral, Parramatta, a new Cathedral complex which incorporates the old 1857 building which was destroyed by fire in 1996. The opening of the new Cathedral was celebrated on 29 November 2003. For Romaldo Giurgola this project provided an opportunity to reflect on his lifes work and toincorporate in the buildings, and the art works which were specially commissioned for them, the architectural principles he values most. These have been developed over many decades from the time of his education in Italy through to academic post and architectural projects undertaken in the USA, Europe, Australia and Asia. He regards architecture as a symbolic expression of peoples cultural identities and aspirations. With this in mind, he has created in Parramatta a singular masterpiece characterised by its simplicity, serenity and contemplative character. This beautifully written and illustrated publication provides eloquent insights into the art of architecture and Romaldo Giurgolas spatial philosophy.

The Historiography Of Modern Architecture written by Panayotis Tournikiotis and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-02-27 with Architecture categories.

The history of modern architecture as constructed by historians and key texts. Writing, according to Panayotis Tournikiotis, has always exerted a powerful influence on architecture. Indeed, the study of modern architecture cannot be separated from a fascination with the texts that have tried to explain the idea of a new architecture in a new society. During the last forty years, the question of the relationship of architecture to its history—of buildings to books—has been one of the most important themes in debates about the course of modern architecture. Tournikiotis argues that the history of modern architecture tends to be written from the present, projecting back onto the past our current concerns, so that the "beginning" of the story really functions as a "representation" of its end. In this book the buildings are the quotations, while the texts are the structure. Tournikiotis focuses on a group of books by major historians of the twentieth century: Nikolaus Pevsner, Emil Kaufmann, Sigfried Giedion, Bruno Zevi, Leonardo Benevolo, Henry-Russell Hitchcock, Reyner Banham, Peter Collins, and Manfredo Tafuri. In examining these writers' thoughts, he draws on concepts from critical theory, relating architecture to broader historical models.

Architecture And Anthropology written by Adam Jasper and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-21 with Architecture categories.

Both architecture and anthropology emerged as autonomous theoretical disciplines in the 18th-century enlightenment. Throughout the 19th century, the fields shared a common icon—the primitive hut—and a common concern with both routine needs and ceremonial behaviours. Both could lay strong claims to a special knowledge of the everyday. And yet, in the 20th century, notwithstanding genre classics such as Bernard Rudofsky’s Architecture without Architects or Paul Oliver’s Shelter, and various attempts to make architecture anthropocentric (such as Corbusier’s Modulor), disciplinary exchanges between architecture and anthropology were often disappointingly slight. This book attempts to locate the various points of departure that might be taken in a contemporary discussion between architecture and anthropology. The results are radical: post-colonial theory is here counterpoised to 19th-century theories of primitivism, archaeology is set against dentistry, fieldwork is juxtaposed against indigenous critique, and climate science is applied to questions of shelter. This publication will be of interest to both architects and anthropologists. The chapters in this book were originally published within two special issues of Architectural Theory Review.
