En 2001, à l'occasion du cinquantenaire de la mort de Maxence Van der Meersch, se tenait un colloque sur cet auteur, dont les actes ont été réunis sous le titre : Maxence Van der Meersch : " écrire le Nord, écrire le monde ". L'accent était alors mis sur les thèmes privilégiés par le romancier : les lieux, la guerre, le travail, les corps et les âmes. En 2007, à l'occasion du centenaire de la naissance de Van der Meersch, a eu lieu un second colloque, qui, bien sûr, a évoqué les mêmes thèmes, mais cette fois-ci sous l'angle de l'engagement du romancier. Si Van der Meersch ne fut pas engagé au sens sartrien du terme, dans la mesure où il ne s'inféoda pas à un parti politique, à une institution, à un groupement, il profita néanmoins de sa notoriété de romancier pour exprimer dans la presse et, à partir de 1936, dans ses œuvres romanesques et hagiographiques, ses idées politiques, sociales, médicales, morales et religieuses. Non content d'exprimer ses idées, il eut aussi le désir de convertir ses lecteurs à sa vision du monde, marquée par un catholicisme doloriste et par des opinions de droite, qui se trouvèrent en écho, pour certaines d'entre elles, avec la Révolution nationale de Pétain. Dans sa vie, il s'engagea aussi, auprès de la J.O.C. par exemple, et, durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il eut une attitude hésitante, entre actions caritatives dans la mouvance de Vichy et un soutien discret à la Résistance. Ce second colloque international consacré à l'engagement de Van der Meersch était co-organisé par le Conseil Général du Nord et par le Centre de recherche " Textes et Cultures " de l'Université d'Artois. Il a réuni des chercheurs d'origines très différentes : Belgique, Pays-Bas et France, qui, historiens, littéraires, psychologue des religions, médecin ou ecclésiastique, ont contribué, dans un souci d'objectivité, à préciser la nature très personnelle de l'engagement de Van der Meersch. Il reste à souhaiter qu'un autre colloque s'intéresse à un écrivain assez méconnu, dont les techniques romanesques méritent aussi des études approfondies.
