Excerpt from Roman Catholic Claims But there is another method of dealing with the Roman claim. It is by strengthening the fabric of a positive Catholicity, which is not Roman. Such a defensive method it has been my aim to follow in this book. So far as attack is a necessary part of defence, it has not been possible to avoid it. But my purpose is positive, not negative - to build, not to destroy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church and the School Question He took from an envelope a little Wafer, like those used in the Catholic Church, remarking that the communicant was not allowed to touch the wine cup, this being retained by the priest, who after the service generally got drunk on what was left. Romanists say that these wafers are the real Christ - these little bits of cracker, which are easily broken, that become lost, that fall in the mud, that are eaten by rats. If, as is claimed, each one of these wafers is Jesus Christ, then there are a hundred thousand Jesus Christs all over the known universe. There is no power ih them, shouted the impassioned doctor, as he came to the edge of the platform and bent his body until his head almost touched his knees. If there were, I could not say these things against them. To show you it has no power, I will roll it over and break it. Excerpt from The Claims of the Catholic Church: A Letter to the Parishioners of Saint Paul's, Halifax, Nova Scotia And here I may advert to a most erroneous mode of reasoning which is frequently adopted by Protestants, in order to prove the novelty of Various Catholic doctrines. It is the confusion between the period of the first introduction of any doctrine, and the date of of its formal definition by the Church. Thus it is found that certain articles of faith were defined by the Pope, or by a General Council approved by the Pope, at some pan ticular period of history, and it is argued from thence that such articles of faith Were never held in the Church before that time. N ow every one, who has the slightest knowledge of Church history, is fully aware of the fallacy of such a theory. It 1s well known, that no doctrine was ever publicly defined by the Church, until it had been first publicly denied by heretics-ms it was quite unnecessary to promulge a formal explanation of a doc trine which was firmly believed by all Christianshurld on this principle We always find that the later Creeds were invariably more full and explicit than the earlier ones. Not because the Church believed more than formerly, but. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
