Romantic Atheism explores the links between English Romantic poetry and the first burst of outspoken atheism in Britain from the 1780s onwards. Martin Priestman examines the work of Blake, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Shelley, Byron and Keats in their most intellectually radical periods, establishing the depth of their engagement with such discourses, and in some cases their active participation. Equal attention is given to less canonical writers: such poet-intellectuals as Erasmus Darwin, Sir William Jones, Richard Payne Knight and Anna Laetitia Barbauld, and controversialists including Holbach, Volney, Paine, Priestley, Godwin, Richard Carlile and Eliza Sharples (these last two in particular representing the close links between punishably outspoken atheism and radical working-class politics). Above all, the book conveys the excitement of Romantic atheism, whose dramatic appeals to new developments in politics, science and comparative mythology lend it a protean energy belied by the common and more recent conception of 'loss of faith'.

All of us, whether religious, agnostic or atheist, are searching for meaning. And in this wise and life-affirming book, non-believer Alain de Botton both rejects the supernatural claims of the major religions and points out just how many good ideas they sometimes have about how we should live. And he suggests that non-believers can learn and steal from them. Picking and choosing from the thousands of years of advice assembled by the world's great religions, Alain de Botton presents a range of fascinating ideas and practical insights on art, community, love, friendship, work, life and death. He shows how they can be of use to us all, irrespective of whether we do or don't believe.

Arvin’s Atheism, an anthology is a fiercely subtle utterance of a budding virtuoso who is unafraid to talk about the problem that is generally hushed up in the fear of being stigmatized. Arvin’s poems depict various states of mind struggling against the undulations of life. In short it is a protest against depression. The scars of depression are laid bare with his unapologetic truth and his poems read like scars. His poems many times crosses the threshold of the real world into the visionary realm. At times we find he extols death and depression. Arvin helps us in infer-ring the cause of depression and at the same time in highlighting what depression feels like with the usage of his colourful diction be it “purple“, “silver”, “grave red” or “red in blue”. There is an undertone of helplessness and fear highlighting the societal ill with the help of imagery, sombre settings and juxtaposing ideas. The scars of depression leave most of us hiding our feelings in the darkest recesses of our hearts. In “Arvin’s Atheism” we are delighted to see the poet muster up his courage to chronicle his heartache, helplessness and fear. In doing so the poet weaves a beautiful tapestry of various moods which in return as he admits become a panacea for those scars of his dystopian nightmare.

Arguing that there are ways to move beyond the limitations of methodological atheism without compromising scientific objectivity, the essays gathered in The Science and Theology of Godly Love explore the potential for collaboration between social science and theology. They do so within the context of the interdisciplinary study of Godly Love, which examines the perceived experience of loving God, being loved by God, and thereby being motivated to engage in selfless service to others. This volume serves as an introduction to and a call for further research in this new field of study, offering ten methodological perspectives on the study of Godly Love written by leading social scientists and theologians. Drawing on the work of Douglas Porpora and others, the contributors contend that agnosticism is the appropriate methodological stance when religious experience is under the microscope. Godly Love does not force a theistic explanation on data, instead these essays show that it sensitizes researchers so that they can take seriously the faith and beliefs of those they study without the assumption that these theologies represent an incontestable truth.
