¿Cuáles son las tensiones y conflictos a los que las ideas más características del romanticismo pretendieron dar respuesta? Este libro se propone presentar el contexto histórico e ideológico de la modernidad haciendo un balance de los logros positivos de la racionalidad moderna, pero también de sus consecuencias no queridas que revierten sobre esos logros convirtiéndolos en ambigüos. Sobre esa situación se proyecta entonces la propuesta de pensamiento que contienen los escritos de juventud de Friedrich Schlegel, prestando especial atención al trabajo colectivo de los Fragmentos del Athenäum, escritos por varios de los primeros autores románticos del Círculo de Jena. Porque entremezclada con cuestiones estéticas y discusiones literarias, hermenéuticas e historiográficas se perfila en estos escritos una significativa reflexión política que apela al papel central de la imaginación utópica en la constitución de la conciencia crítica y la regeneración del hombre caído en una forma de existencia dispersa y fragmentada. Tras el desencantamiento del mundo y la irracionalidad de los fines causada por la modernidad es necesaria una nueva autoconciencia de lo humano que permita, a la vez, el desarrollo de la libertad, el restablecimiento de los vínculos comunitarios y la elevación de la belleza frente a lo prosaico y lo mediocre.
