Pushkin and Romantic Fashion is about the interpenetration of culture and personality, specifically Alexander I's Russian Empire, a latecomer in post-Napoleonic European history, and Aleksandr Pushkin, virtuoso improvisor yet prisoner of the Golden Age discourses that now bear his name. It focuses on Pushkin's use of the Romantic fragment, especially the link between the fragment and Romantic irony's fundamental and modern questioning of the sources and intentionality of language. In the view of such irony's most eloquent formulator, Friedrich Schlegel, "identity" does not precede speech, but is forged in each improvisational interaction with interlocutor or reader. One finds out who one is by speaking, and all utterances and texts stand in a fragmentary, contingent relation to an accumulating life-text. Pushkin may actually come closest of all major European poets to realizing what Schlegel prescribed, or diagnosed, as the poetics of modernity, not because of any direct links, but because as common latecomers on the European cultural scene, Russian and German writers shared a fascination with European fashions and an ironic talent for conflating or stepping outside them. Thus Pushkin's kaleidoscopic explorations of fashionable European genres, from "Augustan" erotic elegy to the archaic Greek lyric fragment, from the Byronic Oriental poetic tale to Shakespearean chronicle drama, from the modern "society tale" to the Walter Scott historical novel, can be seen as ever more dramatic rewritings of and meditations on a previous life-text. Die thesenhaft zusammenfassende Formulierung: die romantische Ironie sei als ein "Mittel der Selbstrepräsentation von Kunst" zu verstehen, findet im Aufweis von Strukturbesonderheiten ausgewählter Werke von Novalis, Tieck und E.T.A. Hoffmann Anschaubarkeit und deutliche Bestätigung. Als Postulat und Gestaltungsprinzip erscheint diese Ironie somit in ihren verschiedenen Ausprägungen als signifikantes Beispiel intellektueller Produktivität. VORBEMERKUNG Auf den nachfolgenden Seiten werde ich versuchen, eine Theorie der romantischen Ironie zu entwerfen, indem ich verschiedene Schriften heranziehe, unter anderem von Friedrich von Schlegel, Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Solger und von Jean Paul Friedrich Richter, um aus diesen einen Zusammenhang zur Ironie feststellen und genauer erläutern zu können. Damit man sieht, in welcher Zeit eine solche Konzeption zustande kommen kann, soll gleich als erstes die Romantik als Epoche betrachtet, und eine Begriffsklärung dieser Epoche vollzo-gen werden. Anschließend kommt die Ironie ins Spiel. Vorerst aber nur, um im Vergleich mit nahestehenden Begriffen eine erste Klärung vornehmen zu können, bevor die Entwicklung des Ironie-Begriffs bis zur Romantik beschrieben werden kann. Im angrenzenden Hauptteil der Arbeit komme ich dann zum eigentlichen Thema, nämlich zur romantischen Ironie. So werden von mir darin, verschiedene synonyme Begriffe, wie Schle-gels romantischer Ironie-Begriff, Solgers künstlerischer Ironie-Begriff und Jean Pauls Humor-Begriff aus ihren Schriften her bestimmt und vorgestellt, um sie in einer kurzen Zusammen-fassung miteinander zu vergleichen. Es gab jedoch auch Zeitgenossen und Nachfolger, welche die Romantik und speziell die uns hier interessierende romantische Ironie heftigst ablehnten. Damit die romantische Ironie voll-ständig in die Geschichte der eigentlichen Ironie eingeordnet werden kann, möchte ich auch diesen Kritikern in einem abschließenden Absatz Platz in meiner Arbeit einräumen. This seminal book examines the dramatic implications of the grotesque in Romantic aesthetics. There are currently no book-length studies exploring the drama of the Romantic grotesque, a category that accentuates multiplicity and hybridity. The post-Kantian philosophy backing Friedrich Schlegel’s Romantic irony provides the most decisive rationalisation of this plurality through theatrical play, and forms the theoretical framework for this study. Poetry and philosophy are merged in Schlegel’s attempt to create Romantic modernity out of this self-conscious blurring of inherited perspectives and genres – a mixing and transgressing of past demarcations that simultaneously create the condition of the Romantic grotesque. The other writers examined in this book include A. W. Schlegel, Stendhal, Victor Hugo, and Baudelaire. The primary question is: how is the grotesque used to re-evaluate notions of aesthetic beauty? An answer emerges from a study of those thinkers in Schlegel’s tradition who evolve a modern, ironic regard for conventional literary proprieties. Furthermore, how does the grotesque rewrite ideas of poetic subjectivity and expression? Here, Back and Forth foregrounds the enormous importance of Shakespeare as the literary example supporting the new theories. Shakespearean drama, which crosses aesthetic borders, legitimises the grotesque while reflecting the blood and gore of a post-Revolutionary Europe. Consequently, in reviewing hybrid texts like the Schlegelian fragments, Stendhal’s Racine et Shakespeare, Hugo’s Préface de Cromwell, and Baudelaire’s De L’Essence du Rire, this book uses theories of continental Romanticism to reposition the significance of a vitally radical English aesthetic. Through this, Back and Forth claims that the Romantic revisioning of the Shakespearean grotesque helps create the ideas of post-Revolutionary modernity that are crucial to the larger projects of European Romanticism, and the ideas of modernity emerging from them.
