Excerpt from Rome, St. Paul the Early Church: The Influence of Roman Law on St. Paul's Teaching Phraseology and on the Development of the Church It is to St. Paul we owe that body of doctrine which has exerted the most profound influence on the thought of the Christian Church. Though the foundation of Christianity rests upon the life and teaching, the death and resurrection of the Divine Redeemer, the details of which are preserved for all time by those who wrote the Gospels, yet it was not from those records, or their authors, that the greatest impulse was derived for the propagation of the new religion: that came from St. Paul. A new conception as to the import of Christs death was introduced by his teaching, which marked an advance upon the views prevailing amongst his predecessors. It involved the recognition of Jesus, rather as the Divine Redeemer than the Messiah, disclosing a deeper significance in His death and risen life, and unfolding new aspects of His personality and mission. Winner of a 2020 Catholic Press Association book award (first place, best new religious book series). The first three centuries of the Christian faith were a period of missionary zeal, deep thought, and tribulation. In The Early Church (33–313): St. Peter, the Apostles, and Martyrs, Catholic historian and biblical expert James Papandrea dispels what he calls common “mythconceptions” about the early years of Christianity. Tracking the challenges of heresy and persecution throughout the period, Papandrea shines a spotlight on the earliest saints and explores the growth and development of the new Church. The first Apostles spread the message of Jesus Christ and were willing to suffer and die for their faith. The next generations of believers followed their example, producing inspiring martyrs including Polycarp, Justin, Perpetua, and Sebastian, and great thinkers such as Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Eusebius. In The Early Church (33–313), author and historian James Papandrea presents a clear account of the Church’s first three centuries and provides evidence to refute fourteen commonly held beliefs about the Catholic Church. You will learn: No money or power was attached to being a bishop or priest in the early Church. Christian holidays were not adaptations of pagan celebrations. Christians have never believed in an eternal life for souls without bodies. The doctrine of the Trinity was not forced upon the Church by Constantine, but rather was a belief from the beginning of Christianity. With clear explanation and inspiring stories, Papandrea sorts through what we do and don’t know about the early Church and enables Catholics and fellow Christians to make sense of the Church’s beginnings.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to accompany St. Paul as he declared the Good News of salvation to thousands who lived in the Mediterranean region? Imagine your satisfaction when the council in Jerusalem mandates limited obligation to the Mosaic Law; and your frustration when the message of this freedom results in defamation and threats of death. Rejoice with Paul as the Roman Consul Gallio declares he is free to teach Jesus as Messiah. Follow Paul into the Antonia Fortress when assaulted by enraged Jews. Listen to his defense before Felix and Festus. Endure a life threatening shipwreck and imprisonment in Rome. Finally, stand by him as he approaches his last days as prisoner under Nero and his death; a victorious transition from a sainted physical life to a blessed and eternal spiritual life. Del Mueller takes readers into the thoughts and hearts of the key witnesses to Paul's missionary journeys. He writes a first person account that provides readers with a unique historical perspective on the stories as they really could have happened. Narratives of St. Paul's Missionary Journeys and Rome will personalize the post-resurrection events that altered the world and show readers the humanness of those who were changed because of Paul's message.

Paul's influence on the history of Christian life and theology is as profound as it is pervasive. A brief survey of almost twenty centuries of Christian thought and practice will confirm the enduring importance of Paul for the life of the church in the Roman and Protestant traditions of the West as well as the Orthodox traditions of the East. Even as Christianity, at the dawn of its third millennium, has become increasingly global and traditions have come to develop and intersect in new and complex ways, Paul's place in the story of Christianity remains deeply rooted in the church's theology, worship, and pastoral life. In both past and present, Paul's influence on the Christian church can hardly be overestimated. Among the many intriguing issues generated by the historical Paul, his New Testament letters, and early church history is the question, what happened to Paul after Paul? Whether we think in terms of the reception of Paul's theology, or the ongoing legacy of Paul, or early Christian reinterpretation of his letters, the questions persist: what did the early church do with Paul's memory? How did it reshape his theology? And what role did his letters come to play in the life of the church? The focus of the present discussion is in the early decades and centuries of Christianity, a time when the memory and legacy of Paul came to serve varied and often competing interests in the emerging church. It was a time when Paul's reputation and importance to the church were being reinforced and when his epistles were gaining the authority that would ensure their place in the sacred library of Christianity. It was also the time when the Jesus movement forged itself into Christianity, a process in which Paul played a pivotal role and eventually also became an object of revision and transformation himself. What is virtually indisputable in this process is that Paul, during his lifetime and after, played a critical role in making Christianity what it was to become.
