With the present ninth volume we bring to a conclusion the edition of the Collected Papers of Professor H.A. Lorentz. It contains the evidence of his constant activity to promote the interest in science of a larger public, in particular of his country men, by addresses on se veraloccasions, by articles in magazines and newspapers, and other wise. In a certain way in this part of his work he belongs more partic ularly to his country, therefore we reproduce it in the original lang uage, with the exception of his inaugural address as Leiden professor early in I878, which readers abroad might be interested in. The sketch of Ludwig Boltzmann, in the German language, contains a most powerful and deep-going survey of the scientific work of this genius. In several places the character of the man's personality rather than that 0/ the scientist reveals itself, his attitude towards various problems and his personal views. In his first address he refers to the value of mathematics, we hear his dislike lor too vivid visual speculations and crude hypotheses, his taste lor the soberness of mathematical formulae, where he argues that the fundamental principles must needs escape further explanation. On page 54 we read what he said about determin ism, and on page I8I he expresses himself on the relation of matter and mind. His intimate feelings on space and time, and the aether, are touched upon on pages 240, 26I, 274.

This is the second and final volume of Dutch physicist Hendrik Antoon Lorentz's scientific correspondence with Dutch colleagues, including Pieter Zeeman and Paul Ehrenfest. These 294 letters cover multiple subjects, ranging from pure mathematics to magneto-optics and wave mechanics. They reveal much about their author, including Lorentz's surprisingly active involvement in experimental matters in the first decades of his career. Letters are also devoted to general relativity, Lorentz's 1908 lecture on radiation theory, and his receipt of the Nobel Prize along with Zeeman in 1902. The letters are presented in their original language; Dutch originals are accompanied by English translations. A concise biography of Lorentz is also included.

Given that the dissemination of enlightened thought in Europe was mostly effected through translations, the present collection of essays focuses on how its cultural adaptation took place in various national contexts. For the first time, the theoretical model of ‘cultural transfer’ (Espagne/Werner) is applied to the eighteenth century: The intercultural dynamics of the Enlightenment become manifest in the transformation process between the original and target cultures, be it by way of acculturation, creative enhancement, or misunderstanding. Resulting in shifts of meaning, translations offer a key not just to contemporary translation practice but to the discursive network of the European Enlightenment in general. The case studies united here explore both how translations contributed to the transnational standardisation of certain key concepts, values and texts, and how they reflect national specifications of enlightened discourses. Hence, the volume contributes to Enlightenment studies, at least as much as to historical translation studies.
