My memoir is about my conscious awakening to my Caribbean Indigenous roots as I journey through the various gardens in my life. In recounting childhood and adult traumas, I discovered a legacy of cultural denial and discriminating practices that left me psychologically scarred. My rehabilitation from the residual effects of colonialism came after extensive self-exploration that involved mending a cultural, spiritual, and mental disconnect. After the dissolution of a common-law-marriage, I found myself dispossessed and battling severe depression, one that threatened to lead me back into a life few are fortunate to escape-drug addition. Dartmouth became a haven for personal change; a safe house to self-discovery whose ivy walls sheltered me from impending homelessness. It is my hope that unveiling my life's story not only reveals the dichotomy of the human condition, but also conveys how reinvention is possible via internal excavation. My desire was to undo the damage of the past through the process of writing as an act of healing.
