The Rose Girl is Fay Howison’s debut children’s book. Set in the pre-industrial past, the book follows the story of two families living at opposite ends of an idyllic valley. At one end of the valley is the forbidding Duke of Ashbury, stricken with grief after the death of his wife. He keeps his daughter, Rosalba, a virtual prisoner in their magnificent home, lest harm should come to her too. At the other end of the valley live the cheerful and unconventional Paget family. When the three Paget brothers learn of Rosalba’s plight, they each hatch a secret plan to rescue her from her father’s clutches. The Paget brothers’ efforts to save the young woman lead them into various misadventures, including an encounter with the dark menacing figure of Lord Jasper Culpepper. Then the discovery of a terrible secret from the past means that the brothers must forget their rivalry for Rosalba’s heart, and work together to defeat the formidable problems they now face. Will the brothers be able to overcome their differences and save Rosalba? The Rose Girl is the first book in a trilogy that follows the Paget brothers and their friends on their adventures in an imaginary country, not unlike England. Fay’s debut book takes inspiration from traditional fairytales, but modernises the genre to make it more accessible and relatable to young girls. Fay’s book will be enjoyed by young readers generally, and will appeal specially to girls aged 10-14 who like the romantic-comedy genre. Praise for The Rose Girl: “As soon as I read the prologue, I thought to myself, I am not putting this down for a moment!” – Sophia, aged 11 “It is gripping, funny and always exciting. I recommend it to everyone.” – Jessie, aged 12

Margaret Oliphant Wilson Oliphant (born Margaret Oliphant Wilson; 4 April 1828 - 20 June 1897) was a Scottish novelist and historical writer, who usually wrote as Mrs. Oliphant. Her fictional works encompass "domestic realism, the historical novel and tales of the supernatural". The daughter of Francis W. Wilson (c. 1788 - 1858), a clerk, and his wife, Margaret Oliphant (c. 1789 - 17 September 1854), she was born at Wallyford, near Musselburgh, East Lothian, and spent her childhood at Lasswade (Midlothian), Glasgow and Liverpool. A street, Oliphant Gardens in Wallyford is named after her. As a girl, she constantly experimented with writing. In 1849 she had her first novel published: Passages in the Life of Mrs. Margaret Maitland. This dealt with the Scottish Free Church movement, with which her parents had sympathised, and which had met with some success. It was followed by Caleb Field in 1851, the year in which she met the publisher William Blackwood in Edinburgh and was invited to contribute to Blackwood's Magazine. The connection would last for her lifetime, during which she contributed well over 100 articles, including a critique of the character of Arthur Dimmesdale in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. In the 1880s she was the literary mentor of the Irish novelist Emily Lawless. During this time Oliphant wrote several works of supernatural fiction, including the long ghost story A Beleaguered City (1880) and several short tales, including "The Open Door" and "Old Lady Mary". Oliphant also wrote historical fiction. Magdalen Hepburn (1854) is set during the Scottish Reformation, and features Mary, Queen of Scots and John Knox as characters. (wikipedia.org)
