Crime written by Nick Ross and has been published by Biteback Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-23 with Social Science categories.

In a whirlwind demolition of dozens of misconceptions about crime, Nick Ross proposes what is arguably the most radical re-think of crime policy since the dawn of policing. Setting conventional thinking on its head, Crime challenges everything we take for granted, showing why the criminal justice system has little effect on crime rates, how policing has been hijacked to serve the needs of lawyers, and how 'facts' about crime are continually manipulated to serve the needs of politicians and the media. Crime is the result of twenty years' experience working with victims and police, and ten years' research to find out what makes crime rates ebb and flow. This is a major work that explodes fallacies and entreats us to be more sceptical. Crime will delight those who come to it with an open mind and infuriate ideologues from the left, right and centre.

Controlling State Crime written by Jeffrey Ross and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-04 with Political Science categories.

Academic research on state crime has focused on the illegal actions of individuals and organizations (i.e., syndicates and corporations). Interchangeably labeled governmental crime, delinquency, illegality, or lawlessness, official deviance and misconduct, crimes of obedience, and human rights violations, state crime has largely been considered in relation to insurgent violence or threats to national security. Generally, it has been seen as a phenomenon endemic to authoritarian countries in transitional and lesser developed contexts. We need look no further than today's headlines to see the evidence of state crime. Rwanda, where government troops massacred countless Hutus and Tutsis, governmental atrocities in Kosovo, at the hands of the Yugoslavian Army, and East Timor where both individuals and property have been decimated, largely perpetrated by the Indonesian military. The study of how to control state crime has been difficult. There are definitional, conceptual, theoretical, and methodological problems, as well as difficulties in designing of practical methods to abolish, combat, control or resist this type of behavior. Jeffrey Ian Ross reviews these shortcomings, then develops a preliminary model of ways to control state crime. His intention is stimulating scholarly research and debate, but also encouraging progressive-minded policymakers and practitioners who work for governmental and nongovernmental organizations. The hope is that they will reflect upon the methods they advocate or use to minimize state transgressions. This new edition will be of compelling interest to students of political science and criminology, as well as general readers interested in human rights, state crime, and world affairs.

AN ANTHOLOGY OF SELDOM TALKED ABOUT TRUE CRIMESMICHAEL BRUCE ROSSOf the many, many criminals who end up on death row, Michael Ross's situation is one of the most complex. Some reluctant guests of the row are vicious and wicked; men and women filled with pure evil. Others are innocent. These are victims of a system which is far from fool proof and frequently driven by political expediency as much as a search for justice. And some people are killers despite themselves, criminals in need of help as well as punishment. Ross fits comfortably into none of those categories. And that is what makes his case so interesting. There is no doubt that he committed murder; there is no doubt he committed rape. He admits as much himself. For that reason, this story needs also to be about his victims - the suffering they and their families endured goes beyond anything we feel for Ross. We should never forget that. But this truth should not distract from the fact that Michael Ross's crimes, his arrest, his subsequent trial and ultimate execution are matters that should not be allowed to float away into the darkness. Yes, wickedness flowed from him, but his story is not that simple. BOBBY BEAUSOLEILBobby Beausoleil was a budding actor who got some bit parts in movies until the met up with the Svengali-like Charles Manson who led him into a life of crime and murder. KENNETH BIANCHICousins Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono, Jr. are collectively known by their media epithet "The Hillside Strangler". These two men were responsible for the murders of at least nine females, ages 12 to 28, during the late 1970s in Los Angeles, California, and Bianchi killed two more in Washington. After their first three victims did not gain much attention because they were prostitutes, Bianchi and Buono decided to abduct and murder middle-class "nice" girls. Five victims were found on hillsides in the Glendale-Highland Park area during Thanksgiving weekend in 1977 and the resulting panic led to the coining of the moniker "Hillside Strangler".

Gangs And Spirituality written by Ross Deuchar and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-17 with Social Science categories.

This book examines the role of religion and spirituality in desistance from crime and disengagement from gangs. Drawing upon in-depth interviews with male gang members and offenders as well as insights gathered from pastors, chaplains, coaches and personal mentors, the testimonials span three continents, focusing on the USA, Scotland, Denmark and Hong Kong. This volume offers unique empirical findings about the role that religion and spirituality can play in enabling some male gang members and offenders to transition into a new social sphere characterised by the presence of substitute forms of brotherhood and trust, and alternative forms of masculine status. The author presents critical insights into the potential relationship between religious and spiritual participation and the emergence of coping strategies to deal with the ‘stigmata’ that gang masculinity leaves behind. With its wide-ranging and multi-perspective approach, this book will be essential reading for students and scholars of gang culture, masculinity and spirituality, as well as policy makers and practitioners.
