This book examines the construction, dissemination, and reception of the Stalin cult in East Germany from the end of World War II to the building of the Berlin Wall. By exporting Stalin’s cult to the Eastern bloc, Moscow aspired to symbolically unite the communist states in an imagined cult community pivoting around the Soviet leader. Based on Russian and German archives, this work analyzes the emergence of the Stalin cult’s transnational dimension. On one hand, it looks at how Soviet representations of power were transferred and adapted in the former “enemy’s” country. On the other hand, it reconstructs “spaces of agency” where different agents and generations interpreted, manipulated, and used the Stalin cult to negotiate social identities and everyday life. This study reveals both the dynamics of Stalinism as a political system after the Cold War began and the foundations of modern politics through mass mobilization, emotional bonding, and social engineering in Soviet-style societies. As an integral part of the global history of communism, this book opens up a comparative, entangled perspective on the ways in which veneration of Stalin and other nationalistic cults were established in socialist states across Europe and beyond.

Russia and Germany have had a long history of significant cultural, political, and economic exchange. Despite these beneficial interactions, stereotypes of the alien Other persisted. Germans perceived Russia as a vast frontier with unlimited potential, yet infused with an "Asianness" that explained its backwardness and despotic leadership. Russians admired German advances in science, government, and philosophy, but saw their people as lifeless and obsessed with order. Fascination and Enmity presents an original transnational history of the two nations during the critical era of the world wars. By examining the mutual perceptions and misperceptions within each country, the contributors reveal the psyche of the Russian-German dynamic and its use as a powerful political and cultural tool. Als die frühere westdeutsche Geschichtsschreibung die Anfänge der Ordnungspolitik in der SBZ/DDR in die demokratische Selbstverwaltungstradition der Weimarer Republik einreihte und von einem von der Besatzungsmacht "kontrollierten Pluralismus" sprach, kolportierte sie lediglich die "nationalkommunistisch" akzentuierte Geschichtspolitik der SED. Tatsächlich normierte die Besatzungsmacht von Anfang das eigene zentralistisch-etatistische Ordnungsmodell, beherrscht von einer mit dem allseitigen Machtprivileg ausgestatteten "Staatspartei". Der Konflikt zwischen Einflussmethoden der Besatzungsmacht und der Wirklichkeit löste ein nachhaltiges Durcheinander besatzungs-, reichs-, landes- und DDR-rechtlicher Normen aus. Prägnante Belege ergeben sich aus dem Vergleich der ostdeutschen mit der sowjetischen Quellenüberlieferung, weil sie nach unterschiedlichen geschichtspolitischen Interessen modelliert wurden. Die Dokumentation präsentiert Schlüsseldokumente zur Entwicklung der öffentlichen Verwaltung und Durchsetzung der "Parteidiktatur" in der SBZ/DDR und erläutert zentrale Aspekte der ostdeutsch-sowjetischen Interaktion.

Die Publikation schließt eine schmerzliche Lücke in der Aufarbeitung des Stalinismus und der deutschen Nachkriegsgeschichte. Es handelt sich dabei um Todesurteile Sowjetischer Militärtribunale (SMT) gegen Deutsche in der Zeit von 1944 bis 1947. Mit dieser Studie werden zugleich weiter zurückliegende Forschungen des Hannah-Arendt-Instituts für Totalitarismusforschung und der Stiftung sächsischer Gedenkstätten fortgeführt. Lange nach Abschluss des Projekts zu den SMT-Todesurteilen gegen deutsche Zivilisten 1950 bis 1953 war der Zeitraum von 1944 bis zur Aussetzung der Todesstrafe 1947 weitgehend eine terra incognita geblieben. Die jetzt abgeschlossene Forschungsarbeit beruht auf Recherchen in russischen, deutschen und amerikanischen Archiven. Sie präsentiert sowohl eine statistische und qualitative Auswertung der Urteile als auch eine umfassende biografische Übersicht zu den Verurteilten. So wurden nach aktuellem Stand gegen 3301 Deutsche Todesurteile verhängt, 2542 davon vollstreckt. Anders als für die Zeit von 1950 bis 1953, in der die Verfolgung widerständiger Aktionen gegen die Sowjetisierung in der DDR dominierte, stand für die Jahre bis 1947 die juristische Ahndung von Verbrechen aus der Zeit vor 1945 im Vordergrund. Die Studie basiert auf einem Verbundprojekt des Hannah-Arendt-Instituts, der Stiftung sächsischer Gedenkstätten und des Zentrums für Zeithistorische Forschung, die von der Stiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur finanziert wurde.
