Diesen ursprünglich von Paul Goodman inspirierten Satz vertieft Murray Rothbards politisch-ökonomische Theorie - düster und doch ein Licht, das einen Ausweg aufzeigt. Die Infrastrukturen, die uns umgeben, seien es die Kliniken, seien es die Schulen oder Universitäten, seien es die Währungen, seien es die Kulturgüter, seien es die Straßen, seien es die Versorgungsunternehmen, sind Konstrukte der Staatsgewalt. Sie entspringen unfreiwilliger Interaktion: dem politischen Prozess, welchen Gewalt prägt. Etwas wird verbindlich nicht, weil es akzeptiert wird, sondern weil der Apparat (infra-) struktureller Gewalt Minderheiten oder zuweilen auch Mehrheiten unterdrückt und mundtot macht: Das ist der Ausgangspunkt dieses Essays.

Murray Rothbard (1926-1995) was an economist, historian, philosopher, and legal theoretician. His work was unified by a passionate and resolute commitment to a libertarianism that may be characterized as 'anarcho-capitalism' and which implied a belief that even the legal system may be provided privately without the need for a coercive collective authority. Hence, anarcho-capitalists envisage a society where the traditional role of government is wholly subsumed by private, profit-making enterprises and all social relationships are ultimately founded upon consent. Rothbard's unique intellectual contribution was to build this system of thought from many pre-existing but previously disparate strands and to develop it to its logical conclusion. Rothbard's starting points were the notions of methodological individualism, natural rights theory, and individual self-ownership. He showed that if we wish these seriously then the justification for government falls away. According to Rothbard government can only be 'justified' if we abandon the notion that individuals have the right to determine what to do with their own bodies, a step he believed to be unconscionable.

The neglect of time in general and of the time structure of production in particular in mainstream economics led to the rebirth of the Austrian tradition in the seventies. The names of BERNHCLZ, HICKS, KIRZNER and VON WEIZSACKER are representative of different approaches. In 1979 my "Introduction to Modern Austrian Capital Theory" appeared, in which I unified various papers BERNHOLZ and I had written. I also linked our approach to those of VON NEUMANN, of HICKS and of neoclassical capital theory. These "Studies" supplement and continue my "Introduction" in various ways. With all the authors of the present volume I have cooperated for several years. This volume is subdivided into five parts. The first one, Historical Perspectives, gives first an outline on the development of Austrian capital theory from its origins to the present. Next it relates Modern Austrian Capital Theory to SRAFFA's theory and to the Austrian subjectivists' pure time preference theory of interest. The latter theory is represented in its opposition to the traditional productivity-cum-time preference explanation of interest, which is. common t9 neoclassical and BOHM-BAWERKian capital theory alike. The Austrian subjectivist pure time preference theory has been misinterpreted in its recent presentation, which has led to misunderstandings. It is shown that there is no real contradiction between the two appoaches.

Damit die Schrift keine rein historische bleibt wird in der Einleitung kurz die Entwicklung des Liberalismus dargestellt, sowie weiters eine Erklärung versucht, was denn das Konstrukt „Neoliberalismus“ bedeuten könnte. Auch der Begriff der Deregulierung soll definiert werden, um dann zu zeigen, wie das Spannungsfeld Staat – Markt heute noch, oder gerade heute, ein aktuelles ist. Da beide Ökonomen ein sehr umfangreiches Werk vorgelegt haben wird es notwendig sein, sich auf einige Werke zu konzentrieren. Bei Ludwig Heinrich Edler von Mises (1881 - 1973) werden dies die Werke Die Gemeinwirtschaft: Untersuchungen über den Sozialismus, 1922 (engl.: Socialism: An Economic and Sociological Analysis, 1936), Erinnerungen, 1940/1978 (engl.: Memoirs, 1940/1978), Die Bürokratie, 2004 (engl. Original: Bureaucracy, 1944/1962), Die Wurzeln des Antikapitalismus, 1958/1979 (engl. Original: The Anti-Capitalistic Mentality, 1956) sein. Unterstützend wird auf die großen Bücher Mises ebenfalls zurückgegriffen werden: auf das Grundlagenwerk Grundprobleme der Nationalökonomie, 1933 (engl.: Epistemological Problems of Economics, 1960) und auf das Hauptwerk Nationalökonomie. Theorie des Handelns und Wirtschaftens, 1940 (engl.: Human Action – A Treatise on Economics, 1949). Bei Friedrich August von Hayek (1899 – 1992) wird das Hauptaugenmerk auf den Werken Der Weg zur Knechtschaft, 1971 (engl. Original: The Road to Serfdom, 1944), Individualism and Economic Order, 1948 (eine Essay Sammlung aus den Jahren 1930 – 1940) und den Freiburger Studien (1969) liegen. Natürlich wird auch auf Preise und Produktion, 1931 (engl.: Prices and Production, 1931) einzugehen sein. Der Schwerpunkt soll nicht etwa auf die Theorie von Konjunkturschwankungen gelegt werden, mit welcher sich Mises und Hayek intensiv beschäftigten, sondern auf diejenigen Argumente, die sich gegen (fast) jede Art des Interventionismus und der Regulierung richten – und damit, mit den Worten der beiden, gegen den Sozialismus an sich. Sozialismus wird hier im Sinne von einer Unterart des Kollektivismus verstanden.

In “Ideas, Interests and the Development of the European Banking Systems”, Florian Brugger traced decisive moments in the history of the European Banking Sector: from the time of the Italian City-States to the post World War I period, he shows how coalitions of ideas and interests built the tracks along which the European Banking Sector developed.
