As the United States struggled to absorb a massive influx of ethnically diverse immigrants at the turn of the twentieth century, the question of who and what an American is took on urgent intensity. It seemed more critical than ever to establish a definition by which Americanness could be established, transmitted, maintained, and judged. Americans of all stripes sought to articulate and enforce their visions of the nation’s past, present, and future; central to these attempts was President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt fully recognized the narrative component of American identity, and he called upon authors of diverse European backgrounds including Israel Zangwill, Jacob Riis, Elizabeth Stern, and Finley Peter Dunne to promote the nation in popular written form. With the swell and shift in immigration, he realized that a more encompassing national literature was needed to “express and guide the soul of the nation.” Rough Writing examines the surprising place and implications of the immigrant and of ethnic writing in Roosevelt’s America and American literature.

Often, the main difference between a work-in-progress and a finished manuscript is the tenacity of the writer. You can see your idea play out inside your head in beautifully composed and communicated scenes. Then you start to write, but the words feel clunky. Your critical inner voice tells you your writing is not as good as it should be. You start to self-sabotage. You convince yourself that you don't have enough time to sit down and do the work anyway. And your dream of writing this book remains as just a beautiful idea. With practical and proven exercises, author and coach Donna Barker connects behavioural science to the habits and mindsets that successful authors use to finish their first, second, and final drafts. Whether you're writing your first book or your fiftieth, Scrappy Rough Draft has the tools you need to build self-confidence, develop a writing habit that works for you, and identify the kinds of people you need in your writing community to help you get your story out of your head and onto the page. This is the first book in the Creative Academy Guides for Writers series. Be sure to check out the rest of the guides for writers in this series. The second step in most writing efforts is to create a rough draft. This, the third book of the Writing is a Process series, presents the idea of creating a rough draft as the reader follows along with a girl who remembers a stormy night. The girl begins to write her own rough draft by relying on her brainstorming list previously created as well as her own memory and imagination. Through wonderful illustrations and creative rhyme, this story will engage and educate readers on why a rough draft is an important step in the writing process. Simple Outlines Workbook - Trackable Progress - K-3 Short Compositions Practice Workbook can help end the frustration of lost writing papers and confusion about steps in the writing process. Help your child succeed in becoming an excellent writer and celebrate their progress with them through the year!Designed for a complete writing assignment every week for a year (plus a few more just in case), this series of workbooks can help in so many ways!Maybe this sounds familiar - homeschooling papers would 'conveniently' get lost, ripped or tossed. In my frustration I made these three workbooks to work as a team: Simple Outlines (with basic instructions on effective simple outlines kids can easily do), Simple Rough Drafts (with word lists to help make writing interesting), and Simple Final Drafts (with space to illustrate each writing assignment, report, or story). The goal was to make their progress trackable (thus the sub-title: Trackable Progress K-3 Short Compositions Practice Workbook) so we could easily see their progress through the year - all in one nice professionally bound book. The three were separated (outline, rough draft, final) so that a child could easily open one book to use to write the next phase of composition in the next book. These three books were inspired by the writing process used by the Institute of Excellence in Writing (IEW), but are not exclusive, in fact the three steps of writing are so universal these workbooks can help in any composition program.Perfect for: - report writing- story writing- creative writing- any composition that requires the student to outline, rough draft and final draft their assignment. These can be used in a home school setting or at home for homework. As with all my books, journals, workbooks, planners, log books, resource books, etc. if there is something you wish someone had created, let me know, maybe I can create it with you in mind. Check out my author page for more home school/education helps, journals, jokebooks, etc..
