***RUBA'IYAT OF SADI***Translation, Introduction & Notes by Paul SmithHere for the first time in beautiful, poetic English are eighty-eight of the immortal Sadi's wonderful short poems or ruba'is in the correct rhyme-structure and with all of the meanings. Some are deeply mystical, others romantic, satirical and humourous and others intelligently critical of the selfishness of the time… of all time. As fresh today as they were when they were composed some 800 years ago. Included is an Introduction containing The Life of Sadi, his Poetry and his influence on the East and the West and a history of the form of the ruba'i and examples by its greatest exponents. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept as well as the beauty and meaning of these beautiful, and mostly mystical poems. 153 pages.COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'.“It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished. If he comes to Iran I will kiss the fingertips that wrote such a masterpiece inspired by the Creator of all.” Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran.“Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith.” Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator of many mystical works in English into Persian and knower of Hafiz's Divan off by heart.“I was very impressed with the beauty of these books.” Dr. R.K. Barz. Faculty of Asian Studies, Australian National University.“Smith has probably put together the greatest collection of literary facts and history concerning Hafiz.” Daniel Ladinsky (Penguin Books author). THE RUBA'IYAT OF SARMAD Translation, Introduction & Notes by Paul Smith Sarmad (d. 1659) or Hazrat Sarmad Shaheed, whose name 'Sarmad' derives from the Persian word for eternal or everlasting, was a famous and infamous Persian dervish poet of Jewish and Armenian origin. As a merchant he gathered his wares and travelled to India to sell them. In India he renounced Judaism and adopted Islam: he later renounced it in favour of Hinduism which he finally renounced for Sufism. He was known for exposing and ridiculing the major religions and hypocrisy of his day, but he also wrote beautiful mystical poetry in the form of 321 rubai's (all here translated). He wandered the streets and the courts of the emperor as a naked dervish. He was beheaded in 1659 by Emperor Aurangzeb for his perceived heretical poetry. His grave is located near the Jama Masjid in Delhi. Introduction on the life of Sarmad, a history of the ruba'i and examples by its greatest exponents. Bibliography. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept as well as the beauty and meaning of these immortal four-line poems. 381 pages. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'. RUBA'IYAT OF ANVARITranslation & Introduction by Paul SmithAhad-ud-din Anvari Abeverdi (1126-1189) was a court poet of the Seljuk sultans. Jami composed a ruba'i where he names him, along with Firdausi and Sadi as one of the 'three apostles' of Persian poetry. He was also a celebrated astronomer, mathematician and scientist who gave them up for the more lucrative occupation of… a court poet, that he rejected twenty years before his death for a life of contemplation. He is renowned for his delightful wittiness that can be found in many of his ruba'is and qit'as and ghazals. He is known for his sense of humour and sometimes obscenity. He created a new kind of poetry by using the conversational language of his time. Introduction includes: The Life, Times and Poetry of Anvari, Sufis & Dervishes: Their Art & Use of Poetry, The Ruba'i: Its Form, Use & History. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept as well as the beauty and meaning of these poems. 104 pages.COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'.“It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished. *RUBA'IYAT~OF~KHAYYAM*Translation, Introduction & Notes by Paul SmithReprint of 1909 Introduction by R.A. NicholsonOf the 900 to 200o or so ruba'is attributed to Omar Khayyam (died 1132) over 500 years, only ten to twenty percent are now considered to be his. More famous in Iran as an astronomer and mathematician… the nihilistic and hedonistic and occasionally Sufi philosophy in his ruba'is meant his poems were never really popular in his homeland, but after the work of FitzGerald the west fell in love with him. Included in the Introduction: The Life and Times of Omar Khayyam and his work as a Scientist & Philosopher and a history of the ruba'i and examples by its greatest exponents and a chapter on the various translations into English and other languages. Selected bibliography. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept as well as the beauty and meaning of these beautiful, fatalistic, intoxicated, loving, sometimes mystical and satirical 186 four-line poems. 268 pages.
