Rumelant von Sachsen gehört zu den produktivsten Sangspruchdichtern des 13. Jahrhunderts. Als Fahrender war er weiträumig im deutschsprachigen Raum unterwegs, von Aachen bis Braunschweig, von Bayern bis Schwerin, sogar bis nach Dänemark, wo er den unaufgeklärten Königsmord von 1286 anprangert und den jungen Nachfolger lobt. Das Spruchœuvre umfasst Lob- und Scheltestrophen, Gnomik und Moraldidaxe, geistliche Unterweisung, Erbauung und Gebet. Damit ist das typische Spektrum der Gattung abgedeckt; es finden sich aber auch gedanklich wie sprachlich anspruchsvolle heilsgeschichtliche und kosmologische Entwürfe. Rumelants z.T. hoch artifizieller Stil weist hierbei bereits auf die gelehrte meisterliche Dichtung Frauenlobs oder Heinrichs von Mügeln voraus. Erstmals wird nun eine vollständige und zusammenhängende kritische Edition vorgelegt, die neben den über 100 Sangspruchstrophen auch die drei bislang wenig beachteten Minnelieder Rumelants enthält, daneben auch einige ihm zugeschriebene spätere Meisterlieder und eine lateinische Kontrafaktur. Die mittelhochdeutschen Texte werden ergänzt um neuhochdeutsche Übersetzungen sowie einen umfangreichen Kommentarteil.

Rumelant von Sachsen gehört zu den interessantesten deutschen lyrischen Dichtern der zweiten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts. Von ihm sind neben drei Minneliedern vor allem kunstvolle Sangsprüche mit großer thematischer Vielfalt überliefert, in denen er sich in hymnischer Verehrung, meditierend oder spekulativ religiösen Fragen widmet, Zeitkritik übt, politische Ereignisse kommentiert, Herren belehrt und ermahnt, seine eigene Existenzweise als fahrender Berufsdichter bedenkt, freigebige Gönner preist und Geizige tadelt, über Kunst reflektiert und sich mit Dichterkollegen auseinandersetzt. Die vorliegende Ausgabe präsentiert Rumelants Sangspruchdichtung in enger Anlehnung an ihre Überlieferung in der Jenaer Liederhandschrift, zusammen mit den dort aufgezeichneten Tonmelodien (die in Normalnotation wiedergegeben werden) und einer möglichst wortgetreuen Übersetzung. Death is not only the final moment of life, it also casts a huge shadow on human society at large. People throughout time have had to cope with death as an existential experience, and this also, of course, in the premodern world. The contributors to the present volume examine the material and spiritual conditions of the culture of death, studying specific buildings and spaces, literary works and art objects, theatrical performances, and medical tracts from the early Middle Ages to the late eighteenth century. Death has always evoked fear, terror, and awe, it has puzzled and troubled people, forcing theologians and philosophers to respond and provide answers for questions that seem to evade real explanations. The more we learn about the culture of death, the more we can comprehend the culture of life. Older research on the premodern world limited its focus on the Church, the court, and, more recently, on urban space. The present volume invites readers to consider the meaning of rural space, both in light of ecocritical readings and social-historical approaches. While previous scholars examined the figure of the peasant in the premodern world, the current volume combines a large number of specialized studies that investigate how the natural environment and the appearance of members of the rural population interacted with the world of the court and of the city. The experience in rural space was important already for writers and artists in the premodern era, as the large variety of scholarly approaches indicates. The present volume signals how much the surprisingly close interaction between members of the aristocratic and of the peasant class determined many literary and art-historical works. In a surprisingly large number of cases we can even discover elements of utopia hidden in rural space. We also observe how much the rural world was a significant element already in early-medieval mentality. Moreover, as many authors point out, the impact of natural forces on premodern society was tremendous, if not catastrophic.

Beards and Texts explores the literary portrayal of beards in medieval German texts from the mid-twelfth to the early sixteenth centuries. It argues that as the pre-eminent symbol for masculinity the beard played a distinctive role throughout the Middle Ages in literary discussions of such major themes as majesty and humanity. At the same time beards served as an important point of reference in didactic poetry concerned with wisdom, teaching and learning, and in comedic texts that were designed to make their audiences laugh, not least by submitting various figure-types to the indignity of having their beards manhandled. Four main chapters each offer a reading of a work or poetic tradition of particular significance (Pfaffe Konrad’s Rolandslied; Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Willehalm; ‘Sangspruchdichtung’; Heinrich Wittenwiler’s Ring), before examining cognate material of various kinds, including sources or later versions of the same story, manuscript variants and miniatures and further relevant beard-motifs from the same period. The book concludes by reviewing the portrayal of Jesus in vernacular German literature, which represents a special test-case in the literary history of beards. As the first study of its kind in medieval German studies, this investigation submits beard-motifs to sustained and detailed analysis in order to shed light both on medieval poetic techniques and the normative construction of masculinity in a wide range of literary genres.

This study brings recent scholarly debates on oral cultures and literate societies to bear on the earliest recorded literature in German (800-1300). It considers the criteria for assessing what works were destined for listeners, what examples anticipated readers, and how for both modes of reception could apply to one work, exploring the possible interplay between them. The opening chapters review previous scholarship and the introduction of writing into preliterate Germany. The core of the book presents lexical and non-lexical evidence for the different modes of reception, taken from the whole spectrum of genres, from dance songs to liturgy, from drama and heroic literature to the court narrative and lyric poetry. The social contexts of reception and the physical process of reading books are also considered.
