Tom Baldwin and Marc Stears take on seven myths that distort our ideas of England and where the country is heading. 'Challenging, forensic, compelling' Sathnam Sanghera 'Amusing and frequently enlightening' Telegraph 'This iconoclastic masterpiece is well argued and beautifully written. A thoroughly entertaining read' Alan Johnson In an election year when this country stands on the cusp of a change in government, there will once again be efforts to over-inflate myths about England that block out what's important in our politics. Some politicians will talk of restoring an English birthright of liberty or the swashbuckling self-confidence to rule the waves. Others will yearn for the old-fashioned morality with which, they claim, England once civilised a savage world. Still will more look inwards to a story of an enchanted island that can stand alone and isolated against the world. In England, Tom Baldwin, bestselling biographer of Keir Starmer, and Marc Stears, influential think tank head, unravel seven myths that have distorted ideas of this country and provided ammunition for charlatans or culture warriors from both left and right. Instead of vainly promising to solve everything all at once, Baldwin and Stears provide clues for how a humbler, less grandiose, set of ideas rooted in real lives can help fix some of the things that have gone so badly wrong in recent years. They travel from muddy fields in the Home Counties to the ports of Plymouth and Hull. They visit the old industrial heartland of Wolverhampton, spend weekends in the worn-down seaside resort of Blackpool, then gaze up the gleaming towers of modernity on the edge of London and the dreaming spires of Oxford. Along the way, they speak with many different people who tell stories of England, including politicians Nigel Farage and David Lammy, campaigner Chrisann Jarrett, playwright James Graham and scientist Sarah Gilbert. What emerges is a startlingly fresh and vivid picture of a country that belongs to everyone, or at least, to no one in particular.

Runnymede And Magna Carta written by Ben Cowell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-30 with Magna Carta categories.

15 June 2015 marks the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta by King John in the water meadows of Runnymede. The 'great charter of liberties' sent ripples round the world. It influenced the political debates surrounding the English Civil War and the American Declaration of Independence. And it still shapes our ideas about human rights today. At the heart of Runnymede stands the Ankerwycke yew, a tree that was already ancient when King John and the barons met here. Runnymede is a landscape of commemoration: from the Lutyens lodges and the Commonwealth Air Forces memorial to the J.F. Kennedy monument. It is also a landscape of pleasure. Visitors came for the Egham races in the nineteenth century and still come to picnic by the river bank.In this new guidebook, Ben Cowell explains how and why Magna Carta was sealed at Runnymede and explores its legacy. He also describes the campaign in the 1920s to save this precious place for everyone.

Magna Carta written by Derek J. Taylor and has been published by The History Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-04 with History categories.

For 800 years, Magna Carta has inspired those prepared to face torture, imprisonment and even death in the fight against tyranny. But the belief that the Great Charter gave us such freedoms as democracy, trial by jury and equality beneath the law has its roots in myth. Back in 1215, when King John was forced to issue Magna Carta, it was regarded as little more than a stalling tactic in the bloody conflict between monarch and barons. Here, Derek J. Taylor embarks on a mission to uncover the 'golden thread of truth' that runs through the story of the Great Charter. On a journey through space and time, he takes us from the palaces and villages of medieval England, through the castles and towns of France and the Middle East, to the United States of the twenty-first century. Along the way, the characters who gave birth to the Charter, and those who later fought in its name, are brought to life at the places where they lived, struggled and died. As he discovers, the real history of Magna Carta is far more engaging, exciting and surprising than any simple fairy tale of good defeating evil.

Memory Heritage And Preservation In 20th Century England written by David Strittmatter and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-09 with History categories.

This book explores commemoration practices and preservation efforts in modern Britain, focusing on the years from the end of the First World War until the mid-1960s. The changes wrought by war led Britain to reconsider major historical episodes that made up its national narrative. Part of this process was a reassessment of heritage sites, because such places carry socio-political meaning as do the memorials that mark them. This book engages the four-way intersection of commemoration, preservation, tourism, and urban planning at some of the most notable historic locations in England. The various actors in this process—from the national government and regional councils to private organizations and interested individuals—did nothing less than engineer British national memory. The author presents case studies of six famous British places, namely battlefields (Hastings and Bosworth), political sites (Runnymede and Peterloo), and world’s fairgrounds (the Crystal Palace and Great White City). In all three genres of heritage sites, one location developed through commemorations and tourism, while the other ‘anti-sites’ simultaneously faltered as they were neither memorialized nor visited by the masses. Ultimately, the book concludes that the modern social and political environment resulted in the revival, creation, or erasure of heritage sites in the service of promoting British national identity. A valuable read for British historians as well as scholars of memory, public history, and cultural studies, the book argues that heritage emerged as a discursive arena in which British identity was renegotiated through times of transitions, both into a democratic age and an era of geopolitical decline.

Who Do The English Think They Are written by Derek J. Taylor and has been published by The History Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-23 with History categories.

The English are often confused about who they are. They say 'British' when they mean 'English', and 'English' when they should say 'British.' But when England, more than the rest of the UK, voted to leave the EU, polls showed national identity was a big concern. So it's time the English sorted out in their minds what it means to be English. A nation's character is moulded by its history. And in Who Do the English Think They Are? historian and journalist, Derek J. Taylor travels the length and breadth of the country to find answers. He discovers that the first English came from Germany, and then in the later Middle Ages almost became French. He tracks down the origins of English respect for the rule of law, tolerance and a love of political stability. And, when he reaches Victorian times, he investigates the arrogance and snobbishness that have sometimes blighted English behaviour. Finally, Taylor looks ahead. He asks – faced with uncharted waters post-Brexit, what is it is in their national character that will help guide the English people now?
