William Ralston Shedden-Ralston (1828-1889), known in his early life as William Ralston Shedden, who later adopted the additional surname of Ralston, was a noted British scholar and translator of Russia and Russian. William studied Russian literature. He translated 93 of Ivan Andreevich Krylov's two hundred fables, and this work, published in 1868 as Krilof and his Fables, ran to numerous editions. The following year he brought out a translation of Ivan Turgenev's Nest of Gentlefolk as Liza; in 1872, his 439-page Songs of the Russian People as Illustrative of Slavonic Mythology and Russian Social Life, and in 1873 a bloodthirsty collection of Russian Folk Tales.

Excerpt from Russian Fairy Tales: An Accented Russian Reader With Notes and Vocabulary Before the appearance of written literature the Fairy Tale was the only product of the popular creative power, the only outlet for the imagination of the people. It served to brighten the hopeless outlook of the helpless peasant and saved his mind from utter degeneracy. The stories contained in the following pages are taken from the collections published by Afanasief, Khudyakof, Erlenvein, and Chudinsky. I had misgivings when I started this book, as it's as much more a book about fairy tales than a book OF fairy tales. But by the end I was totally won over, and am seriously considering reading more by W. S. Ralston. It is set up so that there's a tale followed by a 'brief' (the author's word, not mine) discussion of the story's merits, meanings, possible origins and closest relatives, with many of those being summarized and discussed in turn. It's undeniably informative, and incredibly well-written; the more I read of it, the more I wanted to read of it. The fifty or so tales included are well-told and interesting, and can be easily accessed from the active Table of Contents. Footnotes were included for further discussions and citations, and were all properly linked to throughout the text. I have to recommend this book because I learned more about fairy tales than I ever thought there was to learn. A merry collection of folktales stretching from Murmansk to Ugolnyye Kopi. I enjoyed the simple 'Cinderella' stories and learned more about the culture than I ever hoped I would. Classic tales from Russia in the beautiful way told that I remember from Saratov summers on the Volga.

Three of Pushkin's magical fairy tales in new translations, accompanied by Ivan Bilibin's stunning original illustrations, in a beautiful hardcover edition Alexander Pushkin, Russia's greatest poet, was fascinated by Russia's folk history, adapting its fairy tales into captivating poetic versions. In the early twentieth century, the book illustrator Ivan Bilibin likewise fell under the spell of Old Russia, drawing on both folk motifs and art nouveau to produce beautiful illustrations to accompany Pushkin's poems. This irresistible new edition presents three of Pushkin's fairy tales ("The Tale of Tsar Saltan," "The Fisherman and the Fish," and "The Tale of the Golden Cockerel") in new versions by the acclaimed translator Antony Wood, alongside Bilibin's sumptuous original illustrations.
