"What is the book about? Twelve Stories of Russia: A Novel, I guess is about an American who moves to Moscow in 1991 - just before the fall of the Iron Curtain - to help Russians understand the difference between the and a. In his quest he is witness to an unsuccessful coup, an even-less-successful rebellion, rampant inflation, unprecedented social, economic and political change, Mafia infighting, and a host of other phenomena that characterize this period. But, alas, the book pays almost no attention to any of this. In Russia such cataclysms are a given, and the narrator, in his discussions with Russian friends, is forced to address much more pressing issues of cross-cultural relations: "Why is it," a friend asks, "that you Americans smile so much?"" "What is the structure of the novel? The book is four hundred forty-eight pages with a total word count of one hundred thirty-seven thousand words. It is divided into twelve chapters called "books," which represent semi-independent stories, each with its own style. The chapters are connected both chronologically and by unifying themes: the main character's quest for the "eleven Russian words that are not just words"; his futile attempt to love vodka; his long-distance relationship with the aunt he has abandoned in his search for "danger."" "Who is the audience? Any foreigner who has been to Russia and can compare the book with his own experiences. Russians who know English and are interested in seeing a fresh, thoughtful perspective on their culture. Intelligent readers who understand that America is not the only country in the world. People who enjoy reading for its own sake." --Book Jacket.

The New Immigrant Whiteness written by Claudia Sadowski-Smith and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-13 with Social Science categories.

Explores the racialization of immigrants from post-Soviet states and the nuances of citizenship for this new diaspora. Mapping representations of post-1980s immigration from the former Soviet Union to the United States in interviews, reality TV shows, fiction, and memoirs, Claudia Sadowski-Smith shows how this nationally and ethnically diverse group is associated with idealized accounts of the assimilation and upward mobility of early twentieth-century arrivals from Europe. As it traces the contributions of historical Eastern European migration to the emergence of a white racial identity that continues to provide privileges to many post-Soviet migrants, the book places the post-USSR diaspora into larger discussions about the racialization of contemporary US immigrants under neoliberal conditions. The New Immigrant Whiteness argues that legal status on arrival––as participants in refugee, marriage, labor, and adoptive migration–– impacts post-Soviet immigrants’ encounters with growing socioeconomic inequalities and tightened immigration restrictions, as well as their attempts to construct transnational identities. The book examines how their perceived whiteness exposes post-Soviet family migrants to heightened expectations of assimilation, explores undocumented migration from the former Soviet Union, analyzes post-USSR immigrants’ attitudes toward anti-immigration laws that target Latina/os, and considers similarities between post-Soviet and Asian immigrants in their association with notions of upward immigrant mobility. A compelling and timely volume, The New Immigrant Whiteness offers a fresh perspective on race and immigration in the United States today.

Russian Refuge written by Susan Wiley Hardwick and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-12-15 with History categories.

In 1987, when victims of religious persecution were finally allowed to leave Russia, a flood of immigrants landed on the Pacific shores of North America. By the end of 1992 over 200,000 Jews and Christians had left their homeland to resettle in a land where they had only recently been considered "the enemy." Russian Refuge is a comprehensive account of the Russian immigrant experience in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and British Columbia since the first settlements over two hundred years ago. Susan Hardwick focuses on six little-studied Christian groups—Baptists, Pentecostals, Molokans, Doukhobors, Old Believers, and Orthodox believers—to study the role of religion in their decisions to emigrate and in their adjustment to American culture. Hardwick deftly combines ethnography and cultural geography, presenting narratives and other data collected in over 260 personal interviews with recent immigrants and their family members still in Russia. The result is an illuminating blend of geographic analysis with vivid portrayals of the individual experience of persecution, migration, and adjustment. Russian Refuge will interest cultural geographers, historians, demographers, immigration specialists, and anyone concerned with this virtually untold chapter in the story of North American ethnic diversity.
