In this provocative and elegantly written short history of Russia, Marshall Poe takes us well beyond the Soviet haze deep into the nation's fascinating--not at all inevitable, and in key respects remarkably successful--past. Tracing Russia's course from its beginnings to the present day, Poe shows that Russia was the only non-Western power to defend itself against Western imperialism for centuries. It did so by building a powerful state that molded society to its military needs. Thus arose the only non-Western path to modern society--a unique path neither "European" nor "Asian" but, most aptly, "Russian." In fact, those who are attracted to her eventually become either obsessed with enthusiasm for all things Russ or embittered with suspicion and hatred. They would seem to prove that there was no middle course. One cannot take Russia casually; she is too big, too fundamental, too promising. She demands attention. Her ways are different from the ways of most nations. Her viewpoint is of a nature that breeds immediate controversy. In attempting to steer a middle course through these pages I may have failed time and again; yet a via media was my plan. Any interpretation must be made clear both to those who are blind to the virtues of the subject in hand and those who are blind to its faults. Hatred and suspicion of Russia has led some to a complete denial of her strength or good intentions; enthusiastic obsession has led apologists to a complete denial of her weaknesses. Excerpt from A History of Russia N ovosiltz, Vorotin, Odoiev, and others and their example was followed by two of Vsevolod's stock, the Prince of Tchernigov and the Prince of Novgorod Sieverski (respectively a son of Ivan Andreivitch of Mozhaisk and a grandson of Shemiaka).1 Now, when the said Ivan Andreivitch and Shemiaka had been worsted in their struggles with Vassilii the Dark, they had, in each case, fled to Lithuania, where they had acquired extensive possessions on the Desna, the Seim, the Sosh, and the Dnieper, as well as the cities of Tchernigov and Novgorod Sieverski. That is to say, they had never been anything but the bitterest of foes to Vassilii. Yet no sooner was the call sounded for a stand to be made for Orthodoxy than, forgetting their hereditary enmity, the son Of the one and the grandson of the other became subject-allies of Vassilii's son himself l - clear evidence that, in proportion as the Muscovite union of princes broadened, it became a union constituting a military hegemony Of' Moscow over all the other allied princes of Rus. Such were the new phenomena prominent in Moscow's absorption of Rus from the middle of the fifteenth century onwards. First the local communities began openly to turn to Moscow, either of their own accord, or at at? Instance of their respective governments; which caused the Muscovite unification of the country to acquire a different character and a faster rate of progress.
