Untersuchungsgegenstand dieser Arbeit ist die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung eines rohstoffreichen Landes am Beispiel Russlands (von 1990 bis heute), das Aufzeigen der wirtschaftlichen Probleme aufgrund einer Rohstoffabhängigkeit sowie deren Bedeutung für die wirtschaftspolitische Struktur bzw. Entwicklung des Landes. Zahlreiche empirische Untersuchungen zeigen, dass beim Vergleich des langfristigen BIP-Wachstums rohstoffreicher Länder der Trend eher rückläufig ist. Dieses Phänomen zeigt sich auch für Russland. Oberflächlich betrachtet bleiben die Wachstumsraten relativ stabil. Erst ein Vergleich der verschiedenen Wirtschaftssektoren erlaubt eine Aussage darüber, worauf das Wachstum tatsächlich basiert. In dieser Arbeit wird ein solcher Vergleich vorgenommen und gleichzeitig die Abhängigkeit des Landes von seinen Rohstoffvorkommen aufgezeigt bzw. im Zusammenhang mit dem Industrie- und Dienstleistungssektor betrachtet. Ein für Rohstoffökonomie typisches Phänomen, das Dutch-Disease-Phänomen oder auch Holländische Krankheit genannt, wird anhand eines Modells erklärt. Um festzustellen, ob die russische Wirtschaft auch die Merkmale einer Holländischen Krankheit aufweist, wird der Einfluss der Finanzkrise in Russland im Jahr 1998 und in der Zeit des Ölpreisbooms bzw. im Jahr der Weltwirtschaftskrise 2008 beschrieben. Die Bedeutung der Ölfonds zur Minderung der negativen Auswirkungen bei Ölpreisschwankungen ist ein weiterer wichtiger Punkt, der im Rahmen dieser Arbeit betrachtet wird.

This paper presents a critical survey of the literature on the "resource curse", focusing on three main questions: (i) are natural resources bad for development?; (ii) what causes the resource curse?; and, (iii) how can the resource curse be overcome? In respect of these questions, three observations are made. First, while the literature provides considerable evidence that natural resource abundance is associated with various negative development outcomes, this evidence is by no means conclusive. Second, existing explanations for the resource curse do not adequately account for the role of social forces or external political and economic environments in shaping development outcomes in resource abundant countries, nor for the fact that, while most resource abundant countries have performed poorly in developmental terms, a few have done quite well. Finally, recommendations for overcoming the resource curse have not generally taken into account the issue of political feasibility.

Petermann's Maps focuses on the maps published in the famous German journal Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen. This journal, which still exists today, greatly influenced the development of scientific geography and cartography in Germany in the nineteenth century. Numerous articles have been published by recognized experts in this field, along with a multitude of illustrations, showing maps, prints and photographs. The journal developed into an important publication, setting the standard in the history of the great expeditions and discoveries, and European colonial matters. Petermann's Maps contains a bibliography of over 3400 maps, the complete series of maps published in Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen between the year of its foundation, 1855, to the end of the Second World War. Besides the bibliography 160 of the most attractive geographical and thematic coloured maps are included in Petermann's Maps. These maps can also be viewed on the CD-ROM accompanying the book.An extensive introduction precedes the cartobibliography proper, placing Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen in its historical context. The introduction describes the history of geography from the eighteenth century onwards, outlining the development of the study of the science of cartography in Germany. The major role the founder of the journal, Augustus Petermann (1822-1878), and the publishing house Justus Perthes in Gotha played in these developments is discussed at length.
