An authentic compendium of 1970s' New York style and attitude and a confirmed masterpiece. Idols began with an awestruck Larrain visiting Kansas City in the explosively liberating early years of the gay rights movement and befriending Taylor Meade and John Noble. Once they had been photographed, the rest of the troupe followed suit. The result is a collection of photographs of a generation of New York's most talented, outrageous, glamorous and mostly gay personalities who posed for Larrain in his now legendary Soho studio.

In his first published monograph, Tyler Mitchell, one of America's distinguished photographers, imagines what a Black utopia could look like. I Can Make You Feel Good, is a 206-page celebration of photographer and filmmaker Tyler Mitchell's distinctive vision of a Black utopia. The book unifies and expands upon Mitchell's body of photography and film from his first US solo exhibition at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York. Each page of I Can Make You Feel Good is full bleed and bathed in Mitchell's signature candy-colored palette. With no white space visible, the book's design mirrors the photographer's all-encompassing vision which is characterized by a use of glowing natural light and rich color to portray the young Black men and women he photographs with intimacy and optimism. The monograph features written contributions from Hans Ulrich Obrist (Artistic Director, Serpentine Galleries), Deborah Willis (Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University), Mirjam Kooiman (Curator, Foam) and Isolde Brielmaier (Curator-at-Large, ICP), whose critical voices examine the cultural prevalence of Mitchell's reimagining of the Black experience. Based in Brooklyn, Mitchell works across many genres to explore and document a new aesthetic of Blackness. He is regularly published in avant- garde magazines, commissioned by prominent fashion houses, and exhibited in renowned art institutions, Mitchell has lectured at many such institutions including Harvard University, Paris Photo and the International Center of Photography (ICP), on the politics of image making.

Tom Sachs written by David Rimanelli and has been published by Rizzoli Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-19 with Art categories.

The most recent body of paintings of this New York-based artist, featuring the artist's examination of consumer culture in his handmade, "do-it- yourself " aesthetic. This is the first publication to focus exclusively on the roughly hewn paintings by Tom Sachs (b. 1966), tracing his interest in combining cultural icons and corporate logos with a handcrafted aesthetic. Mining the American landscape for iconography, Sachs investigates themes of corporate and cultural identity--such as consumerism, branding, cultural dominance, and technological development--to explore the achievements, failures, and inherent contradictions of contemporary society. In addition to the essay by David Rimanelli and twenty-two plates, there is a conversation with the artist and an extensive chronology. Sachs's meticulously handcrafted paintings depict such diverse topics as the Reese's candy bar, Fanta logo, Family Guy, Air Force One, Krusty O's cereal box, and the American flag; all modern icons that document successes and failures of the American experience and the ambiguities and contradictions inherent in its society and culture.

Lipstick Flavor written by Jérôme Sans and has been published by Damiani Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Photography categories.

This book edited by Jérôme Sans draws a Lipstick panorama within the world of contemporary art photography. Fully illustrated it is conceived as a magazine or a rhapsody without any beginning or end. Throughout the pages unfurls a new history of the relationship with Lipstick. A story that shows how this feminine symbol with particular flavor has pervaded our culture and its imagery. The book brings together more than 40 international artists and their work from Andy Warhol's self-portrait to intimate pictures of Araki and Nan Goldin, collapsed compositions of Maurizio Cattelan and Pier Paolo Ferrari. Sublimed, made-up, eroticized, parodied ... these traces of contemporary cult accoutrement has become an iconic element of contemporary values. A sexy book to be kissed.

Social Practices written by Chris Kraus and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-30 with Art categories.

Essays on and around art and art practices by the author of I Love Dick. A border isn't a metaphor. Knowing each other for over a decade makes us witnesses to each other's lives. My escape is his prison. We meet in a bar and smoke Marlboros. —from Social Practices Mixing biography, autobiography, fiction, criticism, and conversations among friends, with Social Practices Chris Kraus continues the anthropological exploration of artistic lives and the art world begun in 2004 with Video Green: Los Angeles Art and the Triumph of Nothingness. Social Practices includes writings from and around the legendary “Chance Event—Three Days in the Desert with Jean Baudrillard” (1996), and “Radical Localism,” an exhibition of art and media from Puerto Nuevo's Mexicali Rose that Kraus co-organized with Marco Vera and Richard Birkett in 2012. Attuned to the odd and the anomalous, Kraus profiles Elias Fontes, an Imperial Valley hay merchant who has become an important collector of contemporary Mexican art, and chronicles the demise of a rural convenience store in northern Minnesota. She considers the work of such major contemporary artists as Jason Rhoades, Channa Horowitz, Simon Denny, Yayoi Kusama, Henry Taylor, Julie Becker, Ryan McGinley, and Leigh Ledare. Although Kraus casts a skeptical eye at the genre that's come to be known as “social practice,” her book is less a critique than a proposition as to how art might be read through desire and circumstance, delirium, gossip, coincidence, and revenge. All art, she implies, is a social practice.

Brooklyn Photographs Now written by Marla Hamburg Kennedy and has been published by Rizzoli Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-18 with Photography categories.

Brooklyn has seen exponential change over the past fifteen years, and this book presents the best work of the photographers from all over the world who have been capturing those changes and movements in cityscapes, portraits, vignettes, and process-oriented photography. Brooklyn Photographs Now reflects the avant-garde spirit of the city’s hippest borough, containing previously unpublished work by well-known and emerging contemporary artists. The book presents 250 images by more than seventy-five established and new artists, including Mark Seliger, Jamel Shabazz, Ryan McGinley, Mathieu Bitton, and Michael Eastman, among many others. The book documents the physical and architectural landscape and reflects and explores an off-centered—and therefore a less-seen and more innovative—perspective of how artists view this borough in the twenty-first century. This is the “now” Brooklyn that we have yet to see in pictures: what might seem to be an alternative city but is actually the crux of how it visually functions in the present day. This unique collection of images is the perfect book for the photo lover and sophisticated tourist alike.

Yearbook represents a decade’s worth of Ryan McGinley’s nude studio portraits documenting his vibrant community of artists and creatives. An exploration of personal identity and expanded notions of beauty, this is McGinley’s work at its most powerful. Known for his outdoor photography of young people cavorting in the nude, McGinley ventures into the artist’s studio, creating more intimate portraits of his models in Yearbook. Continuing the approach of previous bodies of work, his sitters are often friends, and they exude a candid awareness of the camera, creating joyful, dynamic images. As a master chronicler of downtown New York City for two decades, McGinley captures the lives of his diverse subjects, earning acclaim as the voice of his generation and indelibly capturing the contemporary zeitgeist. The book features brief interviews with many of the models discussing their lives and work, providing an even more thoughtful understanding of the quixotic generations known as Gen Z and Millennials.
