Książka szczególnie polecana adeptom biologii i ekologii wód oraz innym osobom chcącym pogłębić swoją wiedzę z dziedziny dotyczącej ryb i organizmów wodnych występujących w polskich jeziorach i rzekach oraz Morzu Bałtyckim. Świat ryb jest bardzo bogaty pod względem gatunków, różniących się od siebie mozaiką barw i odcieni, kształtów ciała oraz trybu życia. Jedne, długą drogą ewolucji przystosowały się do życia w wodach, gdzie temperatura wynosi –2°C (wody strefy okołobiegunowej), inne potrafią przetrwać w temperaturze wynoszącej nawet 50°C. Z kolei niektóre z nich potrafią przeżyć w wodzie o zasoleniu aż 100‰. Z wyjątkiem ryb, w żadnej grupie kręgowców nie spotykamy się z osobnikami żyjącymi stale w wodzie, latającymi, wychodzącymi na ląd, a nawet przystosowanymi do życia bez wody przez okres kilku miesięcy. Niewielki fragment, z tego ogromnie zróżnicowanego świata ryb podziwiają płetwonurkowie zanurzając się w wodach jezior i mórz, wędkarze, którzy na co dzień prowadzą amatorskie połowy ryb, akwaryści hodując różnorodne ich gatunki, czy zwykli obserwatorzy przyrody wód. Jednakże duża część z tych osób, prowadzi swoje obserwacje nie potrafiąc rozróżnić gatunku ryby jaki dostrzegają, a tym bardziej nie orientując się w jego biologii i trybie życia. W związku z tym oraz po nagłym wzroście popularności akwaturystyki, nurkowania, wędkarstwa, akwarystyki oraz zwiększenia zainteresowania biologią i ekologią wód powierzchniowych powstała potrzeba przygotowania krótkich opisów ryb.
