Ensinar História não é ensinar patriotadas, falsear a verdade histórica para enganar crianças. A frase é atualíssima nesses dias em que professores sofrem ameaças de censura por defensores de uma (inexistente) escola despolitizada. Mas, ela foi anotada, em 1934, por Arthur Cezar Ferreira Reis em outro capítulo de sua luta em favor de um ensino renovado e pela implementação de aulas sobre História local na escola primária. Infelizmente, após oitenta anos, esses saberes foram expurgados da rede pública, revelando uma face dos embates pelo controle dos currículos a serem ministrados. Este livro, o primeiro publicado sobre a História do ensino de História no Amazonas, demonstra de quais maneiras as disputas pela definição dos conteúdos da disciplina aconteceram nos anos 1930. Para tanto, reconstrói espaços e práticas escolares do período através da análise da legislação produzida pelo Departamento de Instrução Pública e de fontes inéditas como a documentação escolar e a produção intelectual inscrita em impressos pedagógicos, como teses de concurso e a Revista de Educação, desvelando alunos e professores, concepções e métodos que fundamentaram uma história ensinada no e do Amazonas.

A divisão da obra está assim definida: Na primeira parte, ofereço um resumo histórico da visão protestante sobre o início do cristianismo, para compreensão dos contrastes de ideias em relação aos outros grupos cristãos. Há uma explicação breve da influência da Reforma Protestante, com o surgimento das igrejas reformadas e, posteriormente, das igrejas herdeiras da reforma, como é o caso da igreja batista. Essa primeira parte visa mostrar um pouco das diferenças teológicas e práticas das igrejas chamadas protestantes que vão atuar na cidade de Manaus. Na segunda parte da obra, descrevo o início do trabalho protestante em Manaus no final do século XIX e demonstro o desenvolvimento dos protestantes na cidade diante das condições favoráveis, em decorrência da receptividade do povo manauense, na época em que a cidade desfrutava do ciclo áureo da borracha, produto extrativista de suma importância para as condições de vida da população local até o início do século XX. Reservo a terceira parte da obra para contar o início do trabalho batista, por intermédio da Primeira Igreja Batista de Manaus, que é uma das igrejas pioneiras do trabalho protestante e a mais antiga igreja protestante existente em pleno século XXI. Essa terceira parte não constitui um favorecimento dos batistas; é resultado da constatação de que é uma igreja com um arquivo histórico abundante de informações, documentos e fotografias, possibilitando ao autor compartilhar dados históricos relevantes. As informações são tantas que essa terceira parte abrangerá apenas a primeira década da igreja.
