A medida que en estos últimos años he ido adentrándome en el franquismo, desde diferentes puntos de observación, lo veo más como un océano de confusión, que hace muy difícil cualquier análisis histórico riguroso. Consciente de estas limitaciones, no por ello he desistido del reto de elaborar una síntesis aproximativa sobre uno de los planos más expresivos de hasta dónde puede llegar una Dictadura emanada de una Guerra civil, sin la cual resulta imposible de explicar. Las libertades y derechos fundamentales de los españoles, es decir su negación, constituyen a mi juicio un ángulo privilegiado para sopesar el alto precio que paga España entre 1939 y 1975, por no decir hasta la Constitución de 1978 y casi hasta hoy (de ahí que el libro concluya en los años ochenta del siglo XX y no en noviembre de 1975, fecha en la que muere Franco, pero no el franquismo).Metodológicamente, se aborda el estudio en un doble plano de análisis: la legalidad y la realidad. Por un lado, las reglas del juego, es decir, un recorrido detallado por la normativa legal al efecto desde las cenizas de la Guerra a la Transición. Y por otro, la realidad asociativa examinada con las fuentes informativas disponibles -que no son las idóneas-, desde una triple vertiente: el discurrir sin sobresaltos de las asociaciones del Movimiento y de la Iglesia, auspiciadas y favorecidas sin desmayo por el régimen, y los apuros del maniatado asociacionismo voluntario, hasta ahora apenas investigado. En este último plano, el panorama que se deriva de dichas averiguaciones es una empobrecida y domesticada tramoya de 'pan y circo', reciclada a medida que pasa el tiempo a las nuevas necesidades y demandas de los ciudadanos (ocio y servicios, o lo que es igual, fútbol y prestaciones).
