Auf halbem Wege zwischen Mantua und Parma liegt das mauerumwehrte Landstädtchen Sabbioneta, umgeben von den weiten Feldern der Po-Ebene. Die im Cinquecento erbaute ehemalige Residenzstadt geriet bald nach dem Tode ihres Gründers Vespasiano Gonzaga über mehr als dreieinhalb Jahrhunderte in Vergessenheit. Heute hingegen gilt der abgelegene Ort als eine der frühesten Verwirklichungen einer "Idealstadt" der Renaissance, deren ursprüngliches Erscheinungsbild weitgehend erhalten blieb. Die Wiederentdeckung Sabbionetas, in dessen historischem Kern etwa 400 Menschen leben, erfolgte seit den 1960er Jahren durch urbanistische und kunsthistorische Forschungen. Die eigentümliche Magie dieser Kunststätte faszinierte nicht nur die Architekturhistoriker, sondern auch einige Filmregisseure und Romanschriftsteller, die die melancholische Atmosphäre des Stadtbildes in ihre Werke einbezogen. Die vorliegende Darstellung führt zunächst in die Entstehung und urbane Struktur der damaligen Neugründung ein. Im Mittelpunkt der Analyse stehen die Bauwerke der Stadt aus dem 16. Jahrhundert und ihre reiche malerische und plastische Innenausstattung, deren Ikonographie und politische Programmatik ausführlich erörtert werden. Angesichts der Fülle der bereits erschienenen Literatur mit vielfach unterschiedlichen Deutungsmustern, zielt diese Untersuchung auf eine kritische Zwischenbilanz der divergierenden "Lesarten" der Rezeption. Dabei werden hauptsächlich Publikationen aus den letzten drei Jahrzehnten berücksichtigt. Da für einige Bereiche noch grundlegende Untersuchungen ausstehen oder als Dissertationen erst angekündigt sind, dürfte die Einordnung Sabbionetas in die Stadtbaukunst noch keineswegs abgeschlossen sein.

Duke Vespasiano Gonzaga (1531–91) of Sabbioneta escaped the net of sixteenth century Italy, its history of wars and conflicts, to fashion a life that was uniquely different. It was in this capacity that he designed Sabbioneta as a genuine “little Athens.” His life was fraught with tragedy, however. Not only did he suffer from syphilis, but his personal troubles left him emotionally damaged. The mysterious death of two wives, including the beautiful Diana of Cardona, forced him to find solace in the construction of his ideal city. As nephew to the legendary Giulia Gonzaga – and with her encouragement – the Duke managed to forge a career as a poet, bibliophile, antiquarian, condottiero, urban planner and diplomat, all against the backdrop of New World discovery, the Protestant Reformation, and the Inquisition. This book reveals another fascinating story: Vespasiano Gonzaga’s link to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Like the Prince of Denmark, he reflects the emergence of our modern consciousness. He was a true Renaissance man whose legacy remains with us to this day. As a self-fashioned personality, the Duke made every attempt to place himself at the forefront of events of his time. His life tells us a great deal about how late-Renaissance men exteriorised their inner world in a bid to achieve immortality.
