Paul's Letter to the Galatians has played a major role in the history of theology, especially in the Church's teaching on grace, faith, and justification. This commentary argues that Paul's doctrine of justification by faith is essentially social in nature and has important ecumenical implications for the Church today. In its original setting, Galatians established a foundation for the unity of Jewish and Gentile Christians: all are justified by the faith of Jesus Christ. In addition to illuminating the historical situation that led Paul to write his Letter to the Galatians, this commentary pays careful attention to the rhetorical structure of this letter and its theological message. The author provides a fresh translation of Galatians, critical notes on each verse of the text, and a careful commentary of the letter in light of Paul's theology. Theories abound on the question of Galatians, why it was written, what it says, and what the implications of that message are. Yet few scholars have devoted themselves at length to this letter. What sets this work apart is its extent and detail, and its academic rather than popular intent.

Of all the writings of Paul none have made so signal a contribution to Christian life and identity as the Letter to the Galatians and the Letter to the Romans. While written at quite separate stages of his apostolic career and very different in tone, the two letters unite in projecting above all a common Vision of God as a God of grace. Both call for a human response of faith and love, from which will flow a Christian life lived in freedom and hope. This commentary brings out these positive emphases in Galatians and Romans, while also remaining sensitive to the part these letters have played in divisions between Protestants and Catholics, on the one hand, and Christian caricature of Judaism, on the other. The aim is to clarify and shed light where Paul can be obscure as well as to bring out the full riches of his powerful presentation of the Good News for the life of believers today.

This study has 14 sessions, incorporating an introductory session and 13 lessons. The Study Set includes the Study Guide by Catherine Upchurch (Galatians) and Clifford M. Yeary (Romans) and a commentary, Galatians and Romans, by Brendan Byrne (Liturgical Press). Brendan Byrne, SJ, is professor of New Testament at Jesuit Theological College, Parkville, Victoria, Australia. A member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission (1990-96) and Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (2000-), he is editor in chief of the theological journal Pacifica. Byrne is the author of numerous books, includingRomansin the Sacra Pagina series and a three-volume commentary on the Synoptic Gospels (Liturgical Press). He is currently preparing a similar commentary on the Gospel of John. Galatians and Romans are pivotal for those seeking to understand the faith and teaching of the Apostle Paul. Many of Paul's themes are shared by Galatians and Romans, but the tone and length of the two works differ sharply. This study opens with Galatians because it was written first. Those who wish to adapt the study will find it easy to split the study into two parts or to simply focus on either Galatians or Romans, as best fits their needs. The Commentary includes a helpful glossary which clarifies the meaning of terms frequently used in discussions of Paul's theology. Galatians addresses Paul's understanding of Christian freedom and justification by faith. He reprimands the Galatians for deserting the Gospel by seeking justification through circumcision rather than through faith in Christ, who achieved our salvation by his sacrifice on the cross. Romans is the longest of Paul's letters. It addresses the universal reality of sin in the world and the need for salvation in Jesus Christ. It explores both the strength and limits of the law of Moses. Paul examines the new life attained in the Holy Spirit as God's gift and proclaims the mystery of God's plan to save Israel. Romans also highlights the ethical demands of the gospel. Preaching Romans written by Frank J. Matera and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-22 with Religion categories.

Although Paul's letter to the Romans is the most theologically charged writing of the New Testament, it is rarely preached from Catholic pulpits. Perhaps some of the Pauline themes? Redemption and sanctification, justification and reconciliation, resurrection and parousia? seem too daunting for homiletic purposes. Not so, insists Frank Matera, who has learned to preach in a Pauline key" that has invigorated the whole of his preaching. Homilists who heretofore have avoided Romans will appreciate Matera's insights on this text that open innovative and important ways of proclaiming the gospel. This slender volume is a gift to homilists who wish to preach from Romans with greater confidence? And to proclaim Paul's theologically rich and assuring message of God's saving grace. Frank J. Matera is the Andrews-Kelly-Ryan Professor of Biblical Studies at the Catholic University of America. A former president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America, he has published commentaries on Romans, 2 Corinthians, and Galatians, and has written books on New Testament Theology, New Testament Christology, and New Testament Ethics. Matera's previous works published by Liturgical Press include Galatians in the Sacra Pagina series and Strategies for Preaching Paul."

The Sermon On The Mount written by Frank J. Matera and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-01 with Religion categories.

Saint Augustine once described the Sermon on the Mount as "the perfect measure of the Christian life." Taking his cue from Augustine, Frank Matera provides an exposition of the sermon for contemporary readers who wish to use the sermon as the standard by which they live their lives every day. Matera shows how the Sermon on the Mount summons believers to single-minded devotion and wholehearted service to God. He unfolds the historical and theological background to the sermon. He explores the meaning of the individual Beatitudes, which articulate Jesus' call for a more abundant righteousness, piety without hypocrisy, and the need to become "doers" of the Word. This lively and engaging commentary is an ideal resource for adult education and Bible study groups. It is also ideal for all who want to live their discipleship more fully.

Resurrection written by Frank J. Matera and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-13 with Religion categories.

At the heart of the Christian message stands the proclamation of the resurrection: the good news that God raised Jesus from the dead. In Resurrection: The Origin and Goal of the Christian Life, Frank Matera explains why the resurrection was so important to the early church and why it remains important for Christians today. Beginning with the gospels, then moving to the Acts of the Apostles, the Pauline Epistles, and concluding with Hebrews, 1 Peter, 1 John, and the book of Revelation, Matera provides a comprehensive overview of how the different writings of the New Testament proclaimed the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Written in a clear and accessible manner, Matera presents readers with a way to understand the central message of the New Testament and of Christian faith: God raised Jesus from the dead. Building on this message, he shows that the resurrection of Jesus enables and empowers believers to live in the world today and provides them with the assurance that God will raise them from the dead as well.
